The movie did do the book justice, but not enough. Donn Pearce gives his experiences on a chain gang in Central Florida with colorful narration and eloquent prose. The beginning page gives just a glimpse of Pearce’s work. The author wrote the screenplay and was nominated for an Oscar. The narrative and description of one of the most miserable existences, grips you and yet it is Shakespearian with its delivery. The book is narrated by one of the gang members, “Sailor†as oppose to the movie in which “Dragline†narrated. The character, Lloyd, “Cool Hand Luke†Jackson does not come into the novel, some 50 pages in, but he is talked about before he arrives. Cool Hand is a symbol of rebellion. It is not just within the ranks of a road gang, but in the spirit of the Sixties that Pearce, gives us this hero. The real beauty of the book, is not just the story, but the prose that Pearce slams the reader. The description of men working and just trying to catch a glimpse of a woman, or the pain of being put in “The Box†makes this book a classic in the darker side of American life. The capturing of Southern dialogs and spirit of the horrendous conditions makes it a great read. Pearce is an author whose talents rivals that of John Fonte, Charles Bukowski, and Hubert Selby. If you love reading the former authors, you will love Pearce. He is an author much overlooked, but his best work was Cool Hand Luke.
I've been on one hell of a lucky streak with reading good books. This book is fantastic. This is old school writing, not the homogenized big-box-store style of writing so popular today. Written in a unique, unforgettable voice, it has the dim glow of greatness humming up from its pages, a kind of once-in-a-lifetime act of lightning-catching, mysterious and beautiful and sad and defiant, everything that makes great art.I've seen the movie at least 20 times. I watch it whenever I start to get them ol' existential doldrums. But this is the first time I read the book and I tell you that it is a different experience and worth reading even if you're familiar with the film. It's not better or worse, just different, and the moment I finished the book I knew I'd read it again. There aren't many books I read more than once.Read it before or after the movie, or on its own. It doesn't matter. It's a great tale, a book to tuck in your pocket and take to the grave.
I would have given this book 4 stars had I not seen the movie. I thought Cool Hand Luke was one of the greatest movies ever. The book was unable to portray the characters, particularly Luke and Dragline the way the movie did. The book was unable to capture the living environment, the time period, the language, and personal interactions the way the movie did. One can read and know the similarities between the book and the movie, however the movie expanded the story in a way that the book failed to do. I would equate this book as compared to the movie in the same way I would contrast Forrest Gump, only that book was terrible.
Donn Pearce, a former convict, who served time in a prison similar to the one presented, has written an outstanding work of literature. The author does not use quotation marks for dialog (works very well - I've never seen that before) and the book's time-line is brilliant. I found the book to be sadder and darker than the movie with a far superior character development of Luke. Many of the familiar scenes in the movie appear in the book, but the book adds many more. You'll meet some memorable characters such as Dragline, Walking Boss, Rabbit, and more.
The movie is a masterpiece. The novel upon which it is based fills in some of the gaps that were not clear from the movie (stuff they had to leave out or not give full details). Luke was bummed by his experience in the 'good war' (WW II). He killed a lot of people and in the end, he wondered why they were fair game. Their Bible was the same as his, just written in German.
Enjoyable. I've seen the movie numerous times and had always wondered how it differed from the book. I liked the book because it was able to develop the characters more. It gives more perspective on Luke as well.
most of Luke's story in book is told by two other prisoners; consequently, Luke's character is not fully developed to explain what the author was really trying to say about Luke, life, and society.
Curiosity got the best of me, having seen the movie 376 times (approximately). Pearce used his personal chain gang experience as the backdrop for this gritty slice of life/character study. Most of the incidents in the book appear in the film even though the story is structured in the first person. The violence is grittier and more intense here but Pearce does an excellent job fleshing out the chain-gang inmates and bosses.
