Not many cookbook came out in recent year reach the same cult status as White Heat, Beyond nose to tail, Au Pied de Cochon. I felt this book has it.It's a fun cookbook and what everyday meal should look like, not commercialized meat. I want my everyday dinner to be like this. Getting chicken with feet on it. How many time you would see chicken in supermarket with feet still intact or head and neck? That's what food should look like as pure as it was over 150-200 years ago before commercialized farming started.I feel Gabriel Rucker is a kinda chef around my neighbor, less ego. Just cook good food and make food fun. His personality has stamped all over this book. I love this book so much that I ordered two more copies and sent them to friends. After reading this book, I simply want to book a flight to PDX to visit my soul sister, eat there, and walk up to the kitchen to say hello to him. And she is a huge fan of this restaurant.

This is one of those cookbooks you can enjoy reading as much as you can enjoy using it. I live in Portland and have eaten at Le Pigeon several times. I've also done quite a bit of traveling and have eaten at several excellent restaurants throughout the US and France, and I can say quite emphatically that this is the best restaurant I've ever visited. As you might expect, the recipes in this book are complicated, and you probably won't be able to duplicate what the restaurant does with them, but if you want to try your hand at preparing complicated recipes concocted by a true master, this will provide you the opportunity. Even if you don't try many of the recipes, you're likely to get a lot of joy just out of reading them.

As a professional cook with a degree in culinary arts I read a lot of cookbooks and other types of foodie books from Betty Crocker to Charlie Trotter. It's easy for a Chef to become far to serious about food, to intense and then they become off-putting. In the introduction to this book you get a look inside the journey of a Chef from being in over his head to being a 2 time James Beard Award Winner. Chef Rucker has a sense of humor while he goes about cooking. The integrity and care of the ingredients, which is vital, is there but with a touch of whimsy.True some of the recipes are almost completely inaccessible to the home cook but they provide a look into the professional kitchen that the Food network and Top Chef cannot provide. It takes time and dedication to accomplish what you see on your table as you dine out and this book is an example of the care that goes into it.

I love the way this cookbook is written. It is not for the quick cook looking to get something on the table quickly. It is more geared for someone who appreciates 'off the beaten track' ingredients that involve a bit of time to coax out the best of ingredients. The dishes are complex and show a lot of thought of planning a dish and why it works. If you enjoy cooking and want to learn knew methods, thought processes about why certain ingredients work well with each other and are looking simply for a different view point on how to prepare new and tried and true ingredients you will enjoy even just reading this cookbook. Can't wait to try this restaurant - although is on the other side of the country!

We have a gourmet cooking group. I gave this book to one of us for his birthday. As the cooking challenge we passed this cookbook around and each cooked an entre and a side dish...The recipes were soooo... good, and the history, stories and other writings throughout the book made the whole experience really fun, because of course, we read the stories! We all went to the restuarant, Le Pigeon, for a dinner and had more fun watching their cooks! Yummy!

Lovely book, predictably pretentious (I know that's kinda the point), from ultra-hipster Portland, interesting recipes but ones your not likely to ever cook on your own (partially because of strange ingredients). Meat centric and completely honest about it.

I love this restaurant. If you're ever in Portland Oregon you got to go!!! Love the cookbook a lot of interesting recipes that are challenging me in the kitchen.

Big beautiful heavy almost coffee table size book. Bought as a gift for my hubby who is a NYC chef. He was very delighted it was on his list. Top chef book.

Lived VC Andrews when I was younger. As a teen the stories had a forbidden sort of intrigue. I wanted to see if they still got my attention and pulled my heart strings. I'm 37 now and just re-read Heaven after all these years, I gotta say I enjoyed it even more now that I was mature enough to really understand and appreciate the struggles and the heartache. Love these stories! No one does twist and turns and webs of heartache and deceit like VCA

I first read this book around the time I was 15; almost 30 years later, I decided to order a new copy and see if it was still as good as I remembered . . . and yes, it is. . . V.C. Andrews' portrayal of the dirt-poor lives of Heaven and her family is among the most vivid descriptions of fictional poverty I've ever read. The characters seem real, and each and every side-character could have a book of his or her own. There are no two-dimensional characters here. Characters such as Fanny (Heaven's sister) may at first seem a certain way on the surface, but once you get into the story, you begin to understand that each character is just trying to survive, in their own individual ways.I will say that the relationship between Heaven and Cal Dennison strikes me quite differently now as I read the story in my 40s as it did when I was 15.The depth of all the characters is superb, and I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a cast of fully fleshed-out characters.Side-note: times have certainly changed when it comes to book-making. Readers of the original paperback will recall that it was released with a double-cover; you'd open the cover, to reveal a portrait of Heaven standing in the midst of her family. This type of cover was common among paperbacks of the 1970s and 1980s ("Heaven" was first released in 1985). With the newer reprint, the front cover is just a single cover with Heaven's face; the family portrait is on the back of the book. Yet another unfortunate downgrading of the once-unique designs of paper-and-ink books in this age of e-books:(

The V.C. Andrews Casteel series has always been my favorite. I’ve reread it numerous times. Compared to today’s “bestselling” authors, V.C. Andrews knew how to write and hold my attention. I get frustrated anymore with current bestselling authors because they put out garbage. I’d get through two chapters and quit because they don’t seem to know what a thesaurus is. I’m tired of redundancy and content that doesn’t flow. This has never been the case with V.C. Andrews.

V.C. Andrews is the queen of psychological suspense novels. Always a fan of hers. This book was a little slow at times but it is an entertaining and somewhat disturbing look into the life of Heaven Can steal as she seeks acceptance from her community and her cold, distant father.

This book is one of my favorites in one of my favorite series. It possesses love, hate, fear, want and intrigue! The imagery makes you feel as if you are actually there experiencing everything for yourself. Regardless of how many times I've read this book once I start I cannot put it down until it's finished!

I remember loving this book when I was 15, but now I'm 30 and after re-reading it I can clearly see this is for feeding a teenage girls emotional needs. I'm not saying it's a bad book, it's quite intense, but it punched me in the face with nostalgia and gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. I will probably have to leave other V.C. Andrews books in my past (because I read all of them) but I will always have a fond memory of them. If you haven't read them do yourself a favor.

I am a huge VC Andrews fan. I wanted to start a series and was unsure of this one at first. It follows the story of Heaven Casteel, and has so many plot twists and turns I do not want to list spoilers. This was an amazing book, I couldn't put it down. You must read the other 4 in the Casteel series, you will not be disappointed!

A fan of V.C. Andrews--beginning with the AMERICAN gothic drama/gothic horror classic series--"Flowers in the Attic.." Andrews's writing punctuates every possible feeling that we as real people could and would probably experience--if we were in fact in similar situations. You can as well--definitely identify central themes with all of her works--a family tragedy, familial secrecy, forbidden love, etc.

#1,003 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

This book will resound well with those infused with passion, teaching them about this feeling and how to recognize it, temper it, and cultivate it effectively without giving it vent to consume us. There are parts where personally it was difficult to face truths about my own passions. Brad and Steve are prime coaches for dealing with these at times harrowing discoveries. All told, a masterful look at an aspect needed in very healthy doses in today's world. Bravo, gentlemen!

I had this book on my radar after thoroughly enjoying Peak Performance. The authors have created another excellent work here. The research and advice that they present is very insightful and is unlike other books I’ve read on high performance and single-minded pursuits of excellence. The prose is very clean and direct. There is something here for everybody, no matter where your interests lie.

Practical examples, tips, practices and snips of great, solid, masterfully written information.

I feel comfortable recommending this little book more for it being a trigger to make one think than any specific advice it gives. Don’t get me wrong. There is specific advice and it’s worthwhile but we’re in a one size never fits all situation where thinking of what the authors’ research has turned up will likely improve your thinking about dedication to task (or career or anything) more than the specifics of what’s worked well for others or what the authors view as general case recommendations. The book starts out with the ‘famous folks who’ve done this’ routine which tends to put my fur up. It’s a variant of the “defer to authority” fallacy. Soon, however, they leave a good deal of that behind and instead go into the meat of the book which tries to advise on how to live a balanced goal oriented life. The key is not just balance but what to focus on as a goal. Do you wish an Olympic gold medal? The key may be not to focus on being on the podium but something else. Not surprisingly, the book is oriented toward athletics which makes sense. After all, that’s where even common weekend athletes wish to improve to the point of excelling. The book reads well – the authors know how to write with an upbeat faster pace which squeezes all the filler and/or boring pointless diatribes. I laughed out loud (at the doctor’s office!) at the authors pointing out what the Buddha called the hedonic cycle. That one sentence is worth the cost of the book as well as the time to read it. I will remember it forever.

Written by coaches and trainers Brad Stulberg and Steve Magness, The Passion Paradox is a self-help book that explores, as the title indicates, the double-edged sword of passion: It can be a great motivator, but it can be a dead-end leading to burnout, delusions, and escapism. How does one harness passion effectively? How does one balance passion with discipline and structure? What is the difference between passion based on the ego’s insecurities and passion based on the intrinsic joy of one’s craft? The author’s explore these questions in an easy-to-read self-help format with a review section at the end of each chapter. In this book you will find the etymology of passion in terms of its historical meaning in religion, its biological foundation (dopamine), and its correct application in the context of self-determination theory, as presented by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan. Those looking to hone their passion for their career, art, or other endeavors will find this a very useful and meaningful book. I recommend as a supplement to The Paradox Passion two books by Cal Newport: So Good They Can’t Ignore You and Deep Work.

To me this book is full of common sense because it has been the way I conduct my life since youth. I found this more of a reminder of how passion can be either fulfilling or destructive. The reminders in the margins are excellent and the conclusion chapter is really what the book is about in two-pages.EXAMPLES of REMINDERS:- "The best route to making your passion a bigger part of your life is to do so gradually."- "Someone who embodies the mastery mind-set judges herself not on whether she accomplishes her goal but rather on how well she executes on her process."MY UNDERSTANDING:The sentences below sums up what this book is to me and not necessarily what was exactly said or meant in the text:- Pursuing an interest and becoming a successful master (or mistress) requires being intrinsically motivated to achieve results rather than being externally motivated on reaching the goal. In other words, satisfaction and passion must come from within otherwise it can become toxic.- One must be self-aware and re-evaluate their passion.- Pursuing a passion means life is unbalanced by default but if we look at our entire life as a whole, we are usually balanced.- We must be patient and keep striving toward our passion to achieve success.- Some of us may have many passions and choose to re-evaluate where we are at different times in our lives so as to re-direct our passions.- What helps us to achieve the life we want is to think about death, This helps us realize there is only so much time that we have so we should be doing what moves us.- There is a fine line between passion and obsession. In summary, this felt like a pep-talk and a reminder of how I already live. I was not personally enlightened although I did appreciate the inspiring notes in the margin.

Most books tell you to follow your passion. the money will follow. this book urges caution in following your passion as it often results in the elimination of everything else of importance in your life. IT cautions us against being obsessive and alerts us to the role fear plays in our life.In a world whereto are measured by your successes, this book gives you a few moments of trying to have a balanced life and not live your life on the need for the renewal of the feelings of dopamine the we get during the chase.I read it in doctors' offices and in transit and found it helpful and clarifying. I recommend it.
