Green Deen: What Islam Teaches about Protecting the Planet, by Ibrahim Abdul-Matin

From Publishers Weekly

"How we manage waste, watts, water, and food should reinforce the moral foundations of our communities...ensure economic and social justice and create the freedom to transform our pollution-based 'gray' economy to one that...is sustainable and 'green.'" Environmental policy consultant and youth organizer Abdul-Matin shares his love of the Earth, which he describes as a mosque, in his first book, a guide to environmentalism that speaks to Muslims in their own terms. Defining a Deen as a path, the author clearly demonstrates how environmentalism fits into the goals and ethics of Islam. Abdul-Matin seamlessly intertwines personal experiences with religious doctrine and environmental information. The author focuses on several facets of human impact-waste, energy, water, and food-and includes discussions of green jobs, political systems, and greenwashing. Though topics will not be new to those who have read secular books about green or simple living, Muslims will appreciate Abdul-Matin's clarity in relating steps to Islam, often providing quotes from the Qur'an (though tips will apply equally to non-Muslims). Less a lecture than an invitation to introspection, Green Deen is a welcome hybrid, providing a glimpse into conservation through the lens of religion. (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

“An important book for everyone! Muslims will be inspired by what their fellow believers are doing to be stewards of the Earth, and all people will gain a more complete and accurate picture of how Islam sees the world.” —Imam Siraj Wahaj, Masjid Al-Taqwa, Brooklyn, New York “Green Deen adds new thinking and allies to help solve the persistent social, energy, and infrastructure challenges that we all face as a planet, as nations, and in our own communities, every day.” —Majora Carter, founder, The Majora Carter Group, cohost of Sundance Channel’s The Green, and host of NPR’s The Promised Land “Green Deen connects faith to environment to social justice. It’s a guide for all of us trying to save people and the planet.” —Rami Nashashibi, Executive Director, Inner-City Muslim Action Network “While there are many belief systems on this planet, few have been as deeply maligned as Islam in recent years. In that context, it is a beautiful and powerful call that Ibrahim Abdul-Matin puts out to his community and to the world, crying out that within Islam are the very tenets which are needed to save the world—for Muslims and non-Muslims. It is an act of faith to be sustainable...that is the essential truth which this book teaches us all.” —Adrienne Maree Brown, Executive Director, The Ruckus Society “Ibrahim Abdul-Matin is one of the premier scholars and practitioners joining the green economy to Islam. His work reminds environmentalism of the spirituality in deep ecology and provides a pathway for an economic system to work within a framework of reverence.” —Nikki Henderson, Executive Director, People’s Grocery “Is this a Muslim book about the environment, an environmental book about Islam, or a poem and a prayer to the unity of all creation? It is all of these and more—Green Deen is a stunning hybrid creation from an extraordinary and wise new literary voice. Please welcome Ibrahim Abdul-Matin, black American and Muslim, to the pantheon of important environmental writers.” —William Upski Wimsatt, founder, League of Young Voters, and author of Please Don’t Bomb the Suburbs “Green Deen shows how the authentic religious values and practices of Islam should lead to a wholesome, healthy, and compassionate lifestyle that benefits all living things. Abdul-Matin writes in accessible, intelligent, and motivating language, making this an excellent book for all readers.” —Ingrid Mattson, PhD, President, The Islamic Society of North America, and Director, The Duncan Black Macdonald Center for the Study of Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford Seminary

A great approach to understanding environmentalism though an Islamic lens. Abdul-Matin highlights major universal Islamic principles that make it clear that one of the major responsibilities God has for humanity is to maintain balance on the earth. He also presents major examples of efforts currently doing good things on this front.

In Green Deen: What Islam Teaches About Protecting the Planet, Ibrahim Abdul -Matin attempts to show how an environmentalist/conservationist belief system and lifestyle are "deeply imbedded in the Muslim tradition from a variety of perspectives." Abdul-Matin is an American-born Muslim who attended Hamza Yusuf's new Zaytuna College in Berkeley, California before returning to his native New York to further his education and pursue work in line with his family tradition as a community activist or policy advisor. His thesis is that six Islamic ethical principles or ideas form a framework of an environmentalist ethos. The six principles he addresses are tawhid, which he describes as the Oneness of God and which he often expounds in a sense of the interconnectedness of all subjects of Creation, ayat, or the idea of signs of God being everywhere including in humanity and nature, khalifah, which he views as the idea of humans as stewards of the Earth, amana, described as a divine trust for humanity to protect the planet, adl, interpreted in context as a call toward just use of resources and treatment of Creation, and mizan, explained as living in balance with the whole of Creation. After a nice forward by Muslim Congressman Keith Ellison, Abdul-Matin divides his discussion into four main parts: waste, energy, water and food. For each, he briefly outlines the environmental issues and tries to show how American Muslims are working to solve these issues by highlighting certain individuals as examples. He also sometimes refers to hadith or Qur'anic verses or in some other way tries to connect one or more of the six principles (tawhid, ayat, amana, adl, khalifah, and mizan) to solutions. As far as the quality of this item for someone interested in following a "Green Deen", a way of life that emphasizes responsible use of resources as part of and in line with Islamic teachings, his advice and outlines are mostly rather pedestrian. The historic and scientific background information in this book tends to be drastically oversimplified. The author fails to address any scientific debate over some claims made, and he makes sweeping gestures around history, at one point seemingly suggesting that there has been one smooth arc of progress from humanity as environmental devils toward fulfillment of the Islamic ideal of humans as proper stewards of the world's resources. However, as an overview or introduction, these aspects are adequate. The writer finally seems to catch his stride about 1/3 of the way into the book. He presents many solid, standard ideas for topics such as making a "Green Mosque" through energy audits, weatherizing, adding off-grid energy sources, avoiding use of disposable dishes and bottled water, incorporating ride-sharing plans, composting food waste, using low energy appliances, getting LEED certification on new construction, growing a community garden, and so on. He also does a fair job of describing a relationship between the modern political landscape and the unjust appropriation of natural resources by some governments and makes an impassioned argument against bottled water. He further succeeds at demonstrating through example that many American Muslims are working on environmental issues in a variety of contexts, although the book would've been well-served to have had even more such examples.Abdul-Matin admits in his introduction to a few limitations that do affect the overall quality of the work. His attempts to tie his chosen six Islamic principles to his overall discussion are often weak. The connections are there, but insufficiently supported in the writing. He becomes extremely repetitive, beginning sections with nearly identical wording and retelling some facts and stories multiple times. The questions he ends chapters with often leave them feeling unfinished rather than bringing them to a satisfying conclusion. He excessively uses the phrase "Green Deen" as if it were a religion or mantra of its own, separate from Islam, in contradiction to his correct contention that Islam and a conservationist stance are already perfectly aligned. And, he presents some content that involves fiqh in ways that may be incorrect for some schools of thought. For example, while making a strong case for organic and free range zabiha meat, he nonetheless claims that eating meat slaughtered by People of the Book is religiously acceptable - a claim that is certainly not a unanimously held position. As a whole, this work lacks in sophistication or nuance, but succeeds in filling a necessary niche in the available literature. A reader will find some content of worth in this effort, although may not be satisfied by the book as a whole. A youth group interested in leading its community toward more environmentally sound practices may find some inspiration and ideas in its pages and may benefit from the effort to employ an Islamic foundation, but will not find a clear, practical guide on how to accomplish its goals; the author leaves it to the reader to figure out how to put the ideals, ideas and examples into action in one's own particular context.

Good and informative read.....

With this book, Abdul-Matin brings Islam out of the shadows, and also brings it back home from the Middle East. He writes in a very accessible, easy to read style. He brings Islam into the mainstream of American Life by discussing very practical and common sense approaches to tackling one of the biggest problems of our era (waste, overconsumption, preservation of our planet).Religion can be relevant beyond just dogma, by helping us to re-frame how we look at our problems. The author is a native born, second generation Muslim, educated, with a sense of civic responsibility, helps me to look at Islam in completely different light. Highly recommended.

Ibrahim does a fabulous job providing the reader with a faith-based perspective on the environmentalism movement. His book is full of interesting and thought-provoking concepts, as well as practical steps to implement a more "green deen". He does a great job writing to a wide audience, whether Muslim or not, environmental activist or not, the book has something for everyone. For those with little or no background in Islam or the environmental movement, Green Deen discusses not only the basics, but also deeper concepts that connect the two spheres. For those who have more knowledge of Islam and/or the environmental movement, Green Deen also provides interesting insights, such as the notion of the earth being a mosque, and the Prophet Muhammad's serious concern with taking care of the planet because of mankind's role as stewards of the earth. And finally, Green Deen is an easy read. Once you pick it up, it's easy to get lost in its content and message.

I very much appreciate this book because it connects two subjects I care so much about: faith and Earth. It is well written with good depth and insight and it really motivates the reader to take action which is what books in this subject area should do. There is a strong emphasis on our roles as stewards of the planet and all that is living on Earth and I think that is really well illustrated with concrete examples that show what the world would look like if everyone took the time to take good care of our living space and others around us. I am grateful to have been able to find such a wonderful book and I am buying more for my friends and relatives as a gift. It is well worth reading and I am already changing my habits to do a better job of taking good care of the Earth and I really feel connected and inspired by this book.

In today's society we are constantly reminded that our worth is judged materiallistically. In Green Deen, the author grounds human worth to our innate connection to the Creator and all created things. How we treat the planet is a reflection of how we treat ourselves. Green Deen is a simple yet deep reminder to reassess our actions. This book explores how the economy affects our green habits. It makes an interesting case that capitalism and consumerism don't have to be anti-environmentalism if practiced differently. I believe this book shows people of all walks of life how to connect green living to their own ideologies and style of living by giving compelling examples of Muslims incorporating the two.

loved reading!!

I have wanted to get the book, "Face Reading in Chinese Medicine," since seeing Dr. Lillian Bridges on the Dr. Oz Show. It is fascinating of how Chinese doctors could tell a lot about their patients by looking at their face. This face reading method was particularly used to avoid touching female patients, except for their extremities, as it was deemed inappropriate to do so. I am still reading the book and plan on re-reading it several times. I keep it on my coffee table because it is quite a conversation starter with guests.

This book was worth every penny! The information is fascinating and has helped me see the correlations of specific features and markings on the face to certain traits in myself as well as other people. My favorite chapter is the chapter on health. Our face gives us clues to conditions before they really set into the body or show up on tests and keeping an eye out for these markings is a great way to catch conditions early. I became aware that dark circles under the eyes is related to the kidney and adrenal system. It is an early warning sign that these organs are stressed and more rest is needed. The book is filled with many things to look for on our face that show the beginning of imbalances such as blood pressure and blood sugar issues. There are even markings to show at what approximate age we will enter menopause. The book is organized well and easy to follow. There are many color photos to illustrate the markings/features described which makes it helpful to understand. Anyone who is interested in learning face reading, this book is a must and I would highly recommend it!

I love my Kindle reader, but some books are better in hard copy, and this is one of them. I view the book as a reference one that you may read from cover to cover, but more than likely you will want to look things up. It is difficult to do that in the Kindle format.Unfamiliar with Chinese medicine, I had a hard time maintaining reference points, I kept thinking through my Western understanding and found something's confusing, again, probably would do better being able to "thumb" back a few pages to reconnect.

I bought this as a gift for my acupuncturist, who is somewhat knowledgeable about Chinese medicine. I thought it would be entertaining, like astrology. But before handing it over I had to take a peek and now I can hardly put it down. She makes a very strong case for face reading as a rational skill, rather than as I thought, a superstitious practice. Also, the photographs, detailed descriptions and explanations are so well done that you may find yourself immediately compelled to start looking more carefully at every face you see, and you will draw conclusions. From what I've found this far, the description of features and character seem to be perfectly valid for my own face and personality.

It said with pictures, I thought there would be better illustrations with explanations of what the actual lines were supposed to mean. Very generalized and vague in my opinion. I threw the book out. Don't waste your money unless your just really bored. Even then I'd find something more interesting to read.

Wasn't sure how grounded her assessments of various facial features would be but I was pleasantly surprised. I was impressed at how lines on face were traced back to the expressions resulting from emotions behind them. I have become more observant of people's faces now. She seems wise and incorporates knowledge across cultures and generations. Women and men will like becoming more conscious of what the marks on faces mean about the person's history of experience.

I'm training to be a medical qigong practitioner and found this book really really enlightening. It contains a lot of wisdom, reaching far beyond the subject of face reading. So so good.

Love this book. Complexity of faces is fascinating. Much food for thought, including opportunity to change existing lines.

"Songs are a very effective way to expose kids to language. These are the nursery rhymes and songs that Korean kids grow up with; their "Mother Goose" if you may." —PragmaticMom.com blog"This is a really pretty book with rhymes and games from Korea. It also has a CD so you can hear how the rhymes should sound. I liked this book." —Cole, Age 7, City Book Review"hellip;it shares fourteen Korean nursery rhymes in Korean, Korean pronunciation and English. The pages of this book are absolutely gorgeous. This book has small asides with instructions or more about the rhyme. Some of the songs are for jumping rope or have hand movements and the instructions explain all of this. Each page is dedicated to a rhyme and the illustrations go along with it in a very simple but colorful way." —Crafty Moms Share blog"The nursery song book does a fantastic job presenting some of Korea's traditional and modern nursery rhymes in a way that makes language learning simple for any age. […] Sit back and relax to the tranquil melodies as you easily master the Korean language alone or with your little on. Singing along to the rhymes will make you feel accomplished and will absolutely aid in your vocabulary retention." —Gone Seoul Searching blog"This colorful compilation of nursery rhymes is written in English and Korean. It also comes with a CD of nursery songs in both languages." —Travel Life magazine"Like singing in a round, there is a lot going on—it is fun and exciting and very busy. Each part deserves attention. First, the book can stand alone as a bilingual book of 14 children's nursery rhymes. Chirpy, simple and bright … Second, the language translation is repeated three times: first in Hanguel script, then in Romanized, phonetic Korean and finally in English. … Finally, the music CD allows readers to listen to correct pronunciation, with each song (played by guitar and sung by young children) performed in Korean and then English. The illustrations are two-dimensional and cartoony, with round bodies and smiling eyes. Both unusual and useful, for this ever-shrinking world." —Kirkus Reviews"Children and animals drawn in a palette of tropical colors cavort through Wright's charismatic collection of 14 traditional Korean songs and nursery rhymes…" —Publishers Weekly

Great book, my class loved it. However when I read it for the first time as I was turning the pages, the binding all came apart :(

The students in my class loved the postcard theme. This story is a fun way to introduce and explore the solar system!

My 2 year old daughter loves this book. She has learned that the sun is "very hot daddy" and loves the pictures of people on Mars. Very educational. Saturn needs more colour - it is not the prettiest planet in the book.

I enjoyed this book, I ordered this book to use for one of my education classes, for a project and the professor and my fellow classmated enjoyed the book very much.

Postcards from Pluto: A Tour of the Solar SystemStudents liked itYou have too many rules I will not review again

From the beginning of this comic strip like tale of an outer space journey children are mesmerized by the non-fiction facts in such unique format. The illustrations are wonderful and accurately depict the details in the text. The actual postcards entertain while teaching and contain humorous addressees and addresses. Postcards From Pluto is a great way to introduce the solar system to kids. This book is a great investment, because it will be looked at and read time and time again!

I am a student seeking my bachelors degree in elementary education and love this book. It can be used during the thematic unit on space and the solar system. It is awesome!

Love the book. My class enjoyed it a lot. It arrived quickly and exactly as described.

Review

“If you read only one book on this subject, I recommend Borderless Economics .” ―Robert Hahn, Financial Times“This is a splendid book...In Borderless Economics, journalist Robert Guest has written -- with data, anecdotes, and humour -- an optimistic account of the state of [migration], adapted to the political, economic and technological possibilities of today.” ―Nature“An informative, engaging survey of the beneficial consequences of globalization.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Robert Guest has discovered the quantum mechanics of economic growth and political liberty. It turns out the wave-particle duality of economic matter and political energy is us. We the people of the world-- moving where we want and doing what we will -- create the universe of progress. Governments of Earth, say goodbye to the Newtonian concepts of nation and state. The apple of Borderless Economics has hit you on the head and knocked you out.” ―P. J. O'Rourke“For most, globalization has been about the movement of goods, services, technology and capital. As Robert Guest succinctly explains in this eminently readable book, globalization is actually about people - their migration, the networks they form and the ideas that they transmit through their mobility. In a world grappling with rising protectionist fever, this book is a warning that those nations who want to batten down the hatches and shut the free flow of people and ideas do so at their own risk.” ―Nandan Nilekani, Chairman, Unique Identification Authority of India“Too much of economic and political analysis is about countries. Robert Guest shows us the myriad ways in which countries are connected by people who move around to learn, to work and to live. These networks are increasingly central both to the nature of opportunity and to public policy issues in the United States. The book is persuasive: America will stay prosperous and strong only so long as we remain the Hub of the World.” ―Simon Johnson, co-author, 13 Bankers, and professor at MIT Sloan“Guest has produced a book that is witty, rigorous, humane, provocative and dazzlingly well-reported. Everyone should read it. Bravo!” ―Tim Harford, author of Adapt and The Undercover Economist“Fantastically entertaining and well-written…[I] couldn't put it down.” ―Chris Anderson, Editor-in-Chief of Wired and author of The Long Tail and Free.“This is a thoughtful, entertaining and above all inspiring hymn of praise to the cultural, social and economic benefits of freer migration. Its conclusion should be noted by every politician running for office: immigration is an opportunity, not a threat.” ―Bill Emmott, author of 20:21 Vision and Rivals“A wonderful antidote to the tired and vague clichés about ‘globalization'. Drawing on a breadth of research and decades of reporting from 70 countries, Robert Guest makes the case for why global migration is (mostly) an extraordinary force for good.” ―Charles Wheelan, author of Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science“Amusing, intelligent, and full of statistics, Borderless Economics is the perfect starting point for exploring new diasporas and international networks.” ―Economics and the Financial Crisis, Global Politics

I heard the author interviewed on National Public Radio and was taken by his description of the benefits of immigration and a future that has a greater relaxation of restrictions and delays in immigration policies. In an early chapter Guest compares North Korea, one of the most isolated countries in the world, with South Korea noting at the end of World War II, the north was more advanced than the south. Today Guest notes the North Koreans suffer from malnutrition exemplified by the fact that the North Koreans are 6 inches shorter than their southern cousins. The amount of isolation and limited education has kept the North economically backward and is the extreme example of a lack of flow of ideas and exchange of information. Guest also challenges those that fear immigration, touching on the USA, noting that immigrants make both countries stronger, adding necessary labor, industry, investors, scientists, doctors and educators to the country they migrate to. In exchange, money is sent back to their family in their home countries creating a direct economic support that has a much more greater impact then aid programs where governments of many counties tap into into significant cuts. The author also discusses other countries particularly China, India and several African nations concerning their economic and social situations. Guest also puts in a more positive perspective about the USA still being the most viable country in the world and most attractive by immigrants who seek economic freedom, the best education in the world, and an opportunity to help their family back home, many often returning to their homeland, bringing education, money and business ideas. As Guest notes, an example are the children of the leaders of China's communist party often sent to the USA for education, returning home; hopefully to initiate positive change not just sustaining the status quo. The author discusses how migration creates diasporas that, particularly with the aid of the Internet, maintain closer connections to family and their culture but yet still can assimilate in their host country. The book is very readable with numerous individual examples of people who have benefited from immigrating including future physicians who regretfully may not return to their native country due to the extreme poverty and difficulty to maintain themselves economically. Ironically, some of their own medical efficiencies in their home countries offer constructive cost control strategies that could enhance our own health insurance costs. But that is the great benefit that Guest presents, the greater the network of exchange ideas and sharing information among societies, doctors, scientists, inventors, investments can make the world better. The conclusion has a touch of John Lennon's 'Imagine', unrestrained immigration globally that may be a reality some day when and if terrorism ever realistically disappears.

This was an easy and insightful read. There was a lot of statistics and facts backup by Robert’s claims. I enjoyed his world views.

Since Freakonomics, there have been so many economics-for-laypeople books. I've read them and enjoy the genre. This is particularly timely, readable and without useless filler and fluff. Well worth the read for anyone trying to keep up with the shifting macro view of the world in common-sense, non-academic language.

Robert Guest is a great non-fiction writer. His experience traveling as an Economist correspondent has given him a wealth of experiences to draw from for this book, and his stories are quite entertaining. The book is positive and full of useful data and well-researched arguments. It was my favorite book I read this year.

The thing that you have to understand about Economists is that they're generally an optimistic bunch, but they're really annoyed by the complications of...reality. They love models: models are perfect and simple. Because they omit externalities and oddities, they work perfectly. The simplest of models involve but two variables: wine and cheese, money and time, socks and shoes, and so on. As you progress further in your studies of the dismal science, you must heartbreakingly accept that in the real world, there is almost no application for a two-variable model. It's heartbreaking because in the sterile simplicity of Economics, the world works perfectly. Everyone who wants a job, has one; everyone who wants to borrow money, can; if you want time off work, you just work fewer hours. In the world of Economics we are all Utility Calculators, and we're very good at what we do. We scan the job market for opportunities, spot them, and train to be the next Michael Jordan, Bill Gates, or Homer Simpson, depending our utility/salary demands (shockingly, no one ever chooses to be homeless, or a drug addict, or unemployed in this model). In the world of Economic models, not only do we all have jobs, but we all have jobs that we're good at, so we make a lot of money. On top of that, we enjoy our jobs. In other words, if you simplify the model enough, you can actually create the conditions for perfect Human Capital Allocation. My point is this: there are a few differences between the skills in this world, and where they are most needed (likewise, the low-skill human labor, and where that's needed). It's just of a pain in the butt that these two groups can't find each other more easily. If they could, so theorizes Robert Guest, we could solve most if not all of the world's problems. In a perfect Economic World, every product has the perfect price, there is no Economic profit, and everyone is maximizing their happiness. How adorable. This is a book about the growing importance of Diasporas, and what it means for all of us (regardless of which country we hail from). So what's a Diaspora, anyway?di·as·po·ra'[dahy-as-per-uh]1.any group migration or flight from a country or region. Synonyms: dispersion, dissemination, migration, displacement, scattering. Antonyms: return.2.any group that has been dispersed outside its traditional homeland, especially involuntarily, as Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. So what happens when the simplicity of Economics smashes head on into the stone cold reality of governments, politics, culture, religion, racism, language, and other barriers? Koreans can work in the USA if they're willing to learn English and speak it 24/7. No shock there. Americans can work in Paris if they can learn French and take up smoking. Anyone (for example a Mainland Chinese) who doesn't have the right Passport, can't leave the country without an invitation letter from Harvard. So, this is the world we live in: some privileged few can re-allocate their Human Capital if they're willing to overcome real barriers, but many cannot. Robert Guest (big shot at The Economist) is suggesting that if we didn't have...er...countries, we wouldn't have all these problems. You could take it a step further and suggest that if we didn't have ownership/territory/property and all the resulting wars, the world would be a much nicer place. But that isn't going to happen anytime soon either. Once again, the model, beautiful as it is, crumbles when we touch it with our clumsy human hands.Real Economic development still comes from the top: great countries with great leaders instilling the big three (education, health and wealth) in a populace in a balanced distribution. But there are a few things we can spread across the world without a visit to the Chinese Consulate: ideas (this might explain why some of the most totalitarian states monitor and block Internet access to `radical thinking'). The great thing about Diaspora Networks is that they're usually made up of the best and brightest. The Mainland Chinese who got into Ivy League schools still make up some of the brightest the country has to offer. With their experience abroad, they represent a fine blend of East and West. They can pick and choose what they like and what they don't like about both. And maybe, just maybe, they can return to their home country and report, and share, and improve things. For that there are three requirements: first, you must leave your home country; second, you must return to your home country; third, you must love your home country enough to want risk everything (your career, your family, your friendships) to change it.More articles like this on 21tiger

This book undeniably changed the way I look at the world. Brain drain can be a good thing? The United states might one-day be more populated than China? Seriously, just read the book.
