As Engineer I love the mathematical models but I love much more the "magnitud order" , when in real situations you need fast answers to know how the things are gonna happen with the use of some handful of variables.This book is perfect to understand the art in the Dimensional Analysis and the Professor Lemons explain it from scratch with all the rigours of a new science. Thank you Mr. Lemons to think in the people that every day need to face real problems and solve them in some minutes.
In our introductory physics classes, we try to push some elementary dimensional analysis as a cross-check that the units of a problem solution make sense. On occasion we push a little further and start a problem solution with the dimensions in mind, but often this very powerful technique is under-taught. This book offers a remedy to that problem. I picture this as a recommended book for physics undergraduates, folks who will tackle the book even though it's not in the main flow of their courses. For those students, there are some great example problems in here leading to genuine physical understanding via dimensional analysis. I was especially struck by the (cover of the book) example of water dripping from a kitchen faucet which led to Reynolds Number and the solving of problems difficult without dimensional analysis. The only drawback I can see to this book is that it's unlikely to be explicitly taught in most programs, there's already a lot of material and books to cover, so it seems most likely this will be used as an auxiliary or supplement text.
I highly recommend this book. I especially like the way the book is in organized around the important dimensional constants and parametres in various sub-disciplines of physics. The discussion on when heat and temperature can be used as independent physical dimensions is especially good. This would be a good book for a mathematician (with a relatively weak background in physics) to read in order to develop a broad overview of several key topics in physics. Sanjay Mahajan's book "The Art of Insight in Physics and Engineering" would be a good compliment to this book. Another would be G. Barenblatt's book entitled "Scaling". Each of these authors bring a different perspective to this important topic. In particular they each use different techniques for finding the dimensionless groups (ratios) that characterize a solution to a physical problem in dimensional analysis. It is useful to understand all of the various approaches to finding these groups.
