Here is a strong female protagonist growing up in a gentrified society. Those who wonder about changes to social structure will be surprised by the relationships McCaffrey writes about: Nimisha is product of an arranged liaison. Her mother feels this way:'Members of the First Families had to set good examples to everyone, even their peers, but they delegated duties; they didn’t do them.'McCaffrey, Anne. Nimisha's Ship (p. 3). Random House Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.Contrary to expectations, Nimisha does not waste time on frivolity. She uses her intelligence and family connections to establish herself as a respected spaceship designer. -and she test flies her latest creation. That grabs our attention. The plot raises the dramatic tension when the ship encounters a wormhole. Pacing speeds up until she is knocked out- great imagery. The impact of later explorations increased my sense of doom, then she makes two dramatic discoveries. The author hands Nimisha many dilemmas which she solves.A minor criticism is how McCaffrey minimized other characters such as household help, space workers, spies, but only refers to results of their attempted assassinations or years of honorable service. (I know, it simplifies the story to ignore minor characters, but there could be so many subsidiary stories here.)Still, this reader would have welcomed a second novel of Nimisha's further adventures.

Another old friend, read again. This story gives a look at a future that may or may not be realistic -- giving the human aspects of living in a universe that has space travel and has developed some interesting and different social structures. The structures provide some of the tension and conflict in the story and the discovery of alien beings who have intelligence gives yet another twist to the plot.I enjoyed this book, again, as I read for different reasons each time -- one time to look at structure, another to look at characters, and always, for the enjoyment of the story.

Just finished a book I first read when it first came out... like all of the great Anne Maccaffrey book, and wonderful look at what the stars might hold for all of us. Her visions of honorable aliens, small minded villains, and harmonic resolutions makes me think that the future is not to be feared.

This is an excellent story with fascinating characters. Strong women abound. The description of the Sh’im is wonderful; and the collaboration between the two sets of beings is heartwarming. McCaffrey is always a great writer; and this book is the best of the many that I have read.

I’ve been a Dragonlover for many, many years...but I have to say that Nimisha’s story is my favorite of Anne McCaffrey’s stories. Her abilities to weave strong, intelligent women into this space adventure story are second to none. Absolutely worth the time... Wish there was more!

This is my second time reading this one, first time on my Kindle. I didn't remember it the same way after so many years since the first read. I looked the story, but I will say that so much of it is "made up." Well, even fairy tales are made up, but somehow they work. I'm not sure why this one didn't satisfy the way her other books have.

Wonderfully drawn characters in a corner of a realistic universe that provides basis for McCaffrey's knack for telling a darned good story. Can't find enough superlatives to cover what I 'd really like to say about this tale. Read it! You won't be sorry. (Then start with the Pern books and get to know even more characters you will wish you could meet.)

I have I believe read every one of Mrs Anne McCaffrey's books now that I just finished Nimishas Ship, I was not in the least disappointed. First class story teller, empire builder, gutsy survivalist, humanitarian, hell of an excellent human being, those of who have got to know her through her writing skills, Love her and wish her well forevermore.

Just got this book, and I am pleased with the wide variety of recipes - looking forward to trying many of them. BUT I am VERY disappointed that the recipes do not give a breakdown of the DASH servings per recipe. There is an introductory chapter that says you need 6 - 8 daily servings of whole grains/day - but does not mention that one serving is about 1/3 cup (I believe). The recipe for, say, Fruit Pizza, says that it makes 12 servings total - but how many of the DASH whole grain servings per serving is that? how many fruit DASH servings (4 - 5 daily servings) is one serving of the pizza? There is a recipe for granola that says it makes 10 cups, and each serving of granola is 266 calories, 10 g fat, etc. - but NOWHERE does it say how big one serving is. (The index is not good either - if you look up granola under "G", it's not there - you have to remember that it is in the "Breakfast" chapter - look up the index category "Breakfast" - and there you find it. So frustrating.) So I don't know if a serving is 1 cup or 1/2 cup or 1/4 cup - BIG difference!I hope the authors revise their recipes to include what DASH servings each recipe contains, and clarify how much ALL their recipes are per serving.

Did not find this book as resourceful as this book would indicate. The recipes are ok , but not the greatest. Your best bet is doing the research yourself , and limit your salt intake which is the basics for the dash diet . I regret making this purchase .

Many wonderful recipes. Loved the section on making salad dressings, sauces and seasonings. I wish there would have been more Main Dish recipes.

good simple recipes with infredients that you normally have on hand. like all cookbooks have adapted to fit my lifestyle

A wonderful addition to any cookbook collection. Easy, delicious recipes. Once you remove excess salt from your diet, you'll never go back

Bought as a gift.

I love this book. It has helped me with the diet. It is hard to find cookbooks that help out with not using salt and this one does with great tasting receipes.

Great Cookbook! Easy to follow recipes, no exotic and hard to find foods. I use it all the time! I also purchased the other Dash Diet Books, and love them.

Review

Praise for The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt   “Magnificent . . . one of those rare works that is both definitive for the period it covers and fascinating to read for sheer entertainment.”—The New York Times Book Review   “A towering biography . . . a brilliant chronicle.”—Time   “Theodore Roosevelt, in this meticulously researched and beautifully written biography, has a claim on being the most interesting man ever to be President of this country.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review   “Spectacles glittering, teeth and temper flashing, high-pitched voice rasping and crackling, Roosevelt surges out of these pages with the force of a physical presence.”—The Atlantic Monthly  “[Morris’s] prose is elegant and at the same time hard and lucid, and his sense of narrative flow is nearly flawless. . . . The author re-creates a sense of the scene and an immediacy of the situation that any skilled writer should envy and the most jaded reader should find a joy.”—The Miami Herald   “A monumental work in every sense of the word . . . a book of pulsating and well-written narrative.”—The Christian Science Monitor

About the Author

Edmund Morris was born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1940. He was schooled there, and studied music, history, and literature at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. After leaving Africa at the age of twenty-four, he worked for six years as an advertising copywriter in London and New York. He became a full-time writer in 1972. His first book, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, began life as a screenplay. It was published in 1979 and won the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. In 1985, Morris was appointed the official biographer of President Ronald Reagan. The resultant work, Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan (1999), was and remains controversial because of its revolutionary narrative technique. Theodore Rex (2001), the second volume of Morris’s Roosevelt trilogy, won the Los Angeles Times Book Award for biography. Before completing his trilogy with Colonel Roosevelt, Morris published a short life of Beethoven. He lives in New York and Kent, Connecticut, with his wife and fellow biographer, Sylvia Jukes Morris.

#58,399 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Written by a brilliant biographer, this book traces the early life of Roosevelt from 1858 to 1901. We see him as a precocious child of a New York aristocratic family, learn of his fascination with nature, particularly insects, and later his travels with parents to the Continent. We see his inquiring, thorough mind as an adolescent, his determination to be healthy and so learning to box; and more travel with his family to the Middle East and Africa, where he is exposed to not only new cultures, but strenuous travel. Eventually he enters Harvard where he finds strengths in science, geography and history shine and weaknesses in math and Latin and Greek; and considers becoming a scientists. He continues to build his body and becomes extremely self-disciplined. Throughout his youth his father is closest to him; and the death of his father is shattering to him. He continues to work on his body-building, taking up rowing until he is tan and forcing himself physically, and meets Alice Hathaway Lee. Out of college, he begins to reconsider his eventual occupation, drawn to politics. During a winter trip to Maine, his health improved; and he discovered he particularly liked talking to those who worked and lived there –“real men.” These growing years thus set the tone for a lifetime of pushing himself to be physically fit, exploring the extremes of climate and nature’s challenges, talking and learning from the “common man” in each environment he travels and lives in. He discovers the joy of hunting, writing history (especially naval history), ranching and cattle raising, fighting and being a soldier and leader of fighting men. We see him plunge into life, from the “Wild West”—the Dakotas—to the jungles of Cuba. His robust enthusiasm for life grows, his fascination with politics grows, his confidence and magnetism grow. He climbs up the political ladder until he becomes the “Boy Governor” of New York, and later Vice-President of the United States-- just as McKinley is shot and dies. Roosevelt was 42 years old when he became President.

There's not really much I can add to the other tons of glowing reports on this book, but I would encourage anyone with an interest in Teddy (he hated being called that!) Roosevelt to read it.I don't believe you need to be a history buff to get into this book, but in all likelihood only those who have such an interest will pick it up. I found it so interesting that I immediately downloaded the second book in the series, "Theodore Rex."There were so many things to enjoy about this book. Not only was the writing absolutely fluid, but it was also written in such a way as to appeal to a broad audience. Though a scholarly work, it wasn't written to appeal only to graduate students in history, but instead it was written to appeal to the masses. The photos were a wonderful addition, as well. This book was amply researched and I was so happy to see all the original letters, diaries, and newspapers quoted. If you really want to get to know Theodore Roosevelt, then read this book! As I stated previously, I'm on the second one in the series and as soon as that's done I'm buying the third. I have over 120 ebooks on my tablet, and I methodically read them in alphabetical order, but when I downloaded "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" I read the first few pages and couldn't put it down. I read a great many books on a variety of topics, but this is really one of those rare books which has kept me spellbound and not a little disappointed when it ended.

Don't let the size of this book intimidate you. It is an enthralling romp through the early life of America's most fascinating president. I love history and biographies and this is my favorite of them all. Reading this book was such a pleasure that I read all three books in the Edmund Morris Teddy Roosevelt trilogy...and I'm thinking about rereading them! Edmund Morris has managed to produce a biography that is both impeccably researched and so beautifully written as to make for effortless reading. In my opinion this book is the gold standard to which all other non-fiction writers should aspire. If you love reading don't miss this experience - read this book!

Edmund Morris's account of Theodore Roosevelt's inevitable journey that takes you from birth to the moment he learns he is president due to the death of President William McKinley is one of the best written books (not just biographies), I have ever read. Certainly the research is evident through the detail of the events recounted. What makes the book worth reading beyond the facts is the precise description of Roosevelt's encounters with nature, the animal world and people of various backgrounds. He is equally comfortable with his own family as he is with the upper class society he meets through his immersion into politics. He is as comfortable leading men to explore the untapped western "badlands" of this country as he is leading them in battle in the liberation of Cuba during the Spanish American war. Morris's book is as close to watching a movie as any book you will ever read.
