Like Mr. Campbell, I have a fifteen year-old daughter. Before finding this book, she and I read, Into the Wild by John Krakauer. We have discussed it for hours and even watched several episodes of Life Below Zero on television. We felt a thirst for adventure, just as James and Aidan have. I'm going to go out on a limb and wager that there are thousands of other parents out there hoping to show their children that life cannot be fully lived when chained within the artificial halo of an electronic screen. As he discusses in this book, the relationship you build with your daughter will go with her for the rest of her life. She should experience the difficulties of this life with you by her side before she has to trek alone or with someone else. Now is when you prepare her.I felt challeng d on several different levels. The logistics and daily issues that go along with living in the wild, the scary endeavor that is raising a child in today's world and answering the call for significance all are themes in this book. I felt as if James were my friend by the turning of the last page. A flawed man, but one intent on being present with his daughter and showing her how to live life fully. You won't find the blinding highs and lows of Chris McCandless' story. But you will be different at the end of this book. Because it forces you to question whether or not you are living fully yourself. And whether you are passing a thirst for fullness on to your children. This is a journey worth taking.

I absolutely loved this book! I love reading outdoor survival books. This was one the best books not only because of what they did but the Dad taking his 15/16 year old daughter on three big outdoor survival trips in the middle of nowhere in Alaska was priceless! I loved his style and the subject matter I could hardly put the book down. You probably won`t see many survival books that a young female teenager is featured in the book and how she and her Dad`s relationship worked in this book. I hope this books sells well because it is a total classic read.

James Campbell tells the story of his making an indelible mark on his daughter over the course of three trips to Alaska in her fifteenth year. This book works as a father-daughter relationship book (somewhat) and as a glimpse of what living and travel above the Arctic Circle is like. The first two trips involve Campbell and daughter joining his cousin Heimo and his wife on their lonely homestead along the Coleen River. First, in summer, they help Heimo build a new cabin to escape the changing course of the river imperiling their home site. Father and Daughter give into wanderlust on returning to their home in Wisconsin and travel again to spend some time with Heimo in winter. There, they meet extreme cold as they accompany Heimo and his wife on his hunting and trapping expeditions (Heimo subsists on animal furs caught and sold). All this in preparation for the ultimate father daughter trek, a summer hike to their put in on the Hula-hula River and canoe trip down the river to the Arctic Ocean. While experienced in handling a canoe in the lower 48, they wisely teamed up with two experienced Alaskan adventurers. The last part of the book chronicles their challenging hike and rapid filled canoe trip. The author faces both aging and the moods of a teenaged girl in his frequent inner dialogues in the book. No revelations here, but his experience and wanderings about his own bodily changes and the challenges of interacting with a daughter on the brink of woman-hood are interesting as many readers no doubt have or will experience the same. This is a pretty good book. The picture of life and travel in the harsh Alaska outdoors is interesting and the best part of the book. The relationship forms the backdrop and provides the reason for the setting.

Very good book. As a father who has taken my daughters to Alaska, this book definitely struck a chord with me. I just wish I had his courage to spend a month in the bush with them. This book is very easy and fun to read. As soon as I finished I ordered another copy for my daughters to read. If more fathers were like James Campbell the world would be a much better place.

I read this as an immediate sequel to Heimo North, the Final Frontiersman. I was not expecting as good a read as it turned out. It was going to be a bog much different. Having done some flat and whitewater canoeing myself urged me to read it. Besides, I like the author's style. I found I could appreciate the river challenges and difficulties. The author did a great job detailing the scenery, the danger, challenges and triumph of the trip. It was exciting and he made me feel I was right along with them. The trials and tribulations of guiding a daughter on such a challenging trip as she literally grew up on the trip were heartwarming and I could relate to the ups and downs of dealing with a teenager. Worthwhile story and I highly recommend. I have camped, canoed, hiked and hunted much in my lifetime, but never having been to Alaska almost made me feel like I had been there and surely regret that I never have. Descriptions of the land, scenery and brutal weather are very real. Although much more intense because of the expedition, most parents can relate to the teen-parent communication difficulties and there is something for everyone to learn.

My husband and I are taking our 12 and 14 year old grandchildren to Alaska for 2 weeks this summer. While we won't be roughing it in the wilderness like Aiden and her dad, this true story gave me an inside look at what it would be like to try to survive in the Arctic wild. I was very impressed at the challenges they met and how they met them together. I don't think most fathers and daughters could do this. Their lives depended on each other and how they handled themselves. I think the author was very honest in what he wrote, not all of it flattering to either himself or his daughter. But, he was able to convey the incredible depth of trust and love the the two if them were able to acquire during this incredible, often life-threatening journey. I highly recommend this book for both adults and young people who are lovers of raw adventure and personal growth that knows no boundries.

My toddler loves it

This is a cute book, perfect to read at bedtime to a toddler or to bring along to a restaurant, when the little one has to sit still and you just need something to keep them entertained. The drawings are fun and cute and give plenty of things to talk about, which is why I like to take books along to restaurants. The subject is love and relationships in general and show that a mother loves her child for all kinds of reasons and loves all aspects of the child. The book is written in rhymes that are perfect to train the memory of the child when reading the book over and over again. I like to switch up images and rhymes to see if the little one remembers which rhyme goes with which image. The drawings are realistic and the book is of sturdy material, sure to last a long time.I recommend this book to parents of toddlers that need a bedtime story book, but also to parents who like me take a book along to a restaurant to entertain the toddler with reading, but also discovering new details in the images that are in the book. Overall, this is a book in the traditional style of children's books, which is quite rare these days, but I love it.Disclaimer: In exchange for an honest review, I received a free copy of the book. The opinion expressed in this post is solely my own and has not been influenced by any third party.

"I love you Funny Bunny, from your whiskers to your toes." Â So begins this love letter of a picture book, a rhyming explanation of the different ways Funny Bunny inspires love. Â Accompanied by adorable illustrations that perfectly capture the mood and the message, and somehow, through the anthropomorphized child and parent bunnies, conveys their love along with a feeling of snuggly comfort and joy. Â Written in the voice of the mommy bunny (when faced with a hairy spider, Funny Bunny calls out "Mom"), this is a wonderful read-aloud choice for a boy or girl. Â And if illustrators are what draw you to children's books, then Sean Julian is a name to look out for. Â Even the end papers will have readers smiling, as Funny Bunny cavorts on patches of grass. While published by a Christian imprint and written by "Zonderkidz" (if you search the Library of Congress information, you may spot a specific name credited with the lovely rhyming text), this is only not overtly, solely Christian with it's themes of love and family. Â Sweet and colorful, available as both a picture book and a boardbook, this would make a wonderful gift. This review refers to a finished hardback copy I voluntarily received from booklookbloggers blogging program. All opinions expressed are my own.

I read this aloud to my nine-year-old sister and she laughed throughout the entire book and completely melted at the pictures (this was a little “young” for her as she’s been reading chapter books for years now, but she still loves them). I agree with her that the illustrations are simply adorable and sweet. The text is very rhythmic, which I enjoy reading. It definitely seems like it is geared more for mom/child with just one page, where the big bunny loves “how you call my name in your own special way” (and the illustration amplifies “MOM!”). Besides that, it fits almost any adult/child relationship and is a sweet little book.Though marketed as a Christian book, there is nothing in here that really is “Christian.” (just for those who are interested in that tidbit)*I received this book from Book Look Bloggers and happily provided my honest review.*

**Disclosure** This book was sent to me free of charge for my honest review from the publisher.About the Book:Together, parents and children will giggle their way through I Love You, Funny Bunny as they discover the fun and loving parts of their own relationship. Illustrated by Sean Julian, I Love You, Funny Bunny is a picture book perfect for sharing at bedtime or any time of day. With read-aloud rhymes and adorable illustrations, readers will have fun turning the pages to discover all the ways this parent bunny loves little funny bunny.I love you, Funny Bunny, from your whiskers to your toes.I love the way you hop around and wiggle your cute nose.I love the way you make me laugh, then melt me with your smile. And no one in this great big world can match your sense of style.Ideal for baby showers, birthdays, or Easter baskets, this jacketed hardcover book adorned with spot gloss and foil is the perfect gift for the funny bunny in your life.My Review: What a sweet book, that is perfect to show that undeniable love between a parent and a child. This sweet book was precious. I read it to my son and then he read it to me. The illustrations are so sweet, as well. This book is perfect as a gift or to add to the home library. My son just started reading and only needed help with a few of the words. Perfect book for a little snuggle-time, as well.

I was excited to get this book but it seems like it’s been used already by the creasing of the pages. Other then that I can’t wait to read it. Make sure your books haven’t been used before selling them at full price.

Very disappointing. Leaves out lots of detail and information and often does not come out with specific recommendations. Lonely Planet, you used to be so good...

Great recommendations of restaurants and sites!

I bought this book right before my first trip to South Africa and it helped me to plan entire trip even though my husband is from South Africa. We both found a lot of interesting information about this amazing country.

Andrew X. Pham `s personal quest for identity and healing, ‘Catfish and Mandala’ is about as good a memoir you will ever come upon. A cathartic journey of healing and adventure written with beauty and power, ‘Catfish and Mandala’ is a rare treat for the bibliophile.Pham, a Vietnamese- American, sets out to cycle the home he was forced to flee after the fall of Saigon. Thus begins a profound and unsettling voyage into family dynamics and the American immigrant experience. More than anything, ‘Catfish and Mandala,’ is the author`s moving requiem for his transgendered sibling, Chi. This memoir captivates and challenges, a story of tenacious survival and overcoming a painful loss.Pham tasks himself with biking from Saigon to Hanoi. Though family and friends warn of the dangers, Pham is not to be dissuaded. His observations of a country transitioning from severe one-party rule to a partial embrace of private enterprise are pithy and wry. “Saigon traffic is Vietnamese life, a continuous charade of posturing, bluffing, fast moves, tenacity and surrenders.” Often times his descriptions touch the lyrical. “Saigon was thick with almsfolk, every market, every street corner maggoty with misshapen men and women hawking their open sores and pus yellow faces for pennies.” Other times Pham crafts aphoristic sentences to be savored and remembered. “Vietnam is a country of food, a country of skinny people obsessed with eating.”Pham manages to survive his trek, but just barely. He endures dysentery, ravaged roads, avaricious relatives and drunken yokels bent on denting in both head and cycle. As the adventures and privations pile up, Pham works through his troubled family past, finally arriving at a tenuous self-forgiveness. Pham artfully weaves vignettes of his travels with flashbacks from his immigrant past. Along the way, he pens jewels of wisdom. “Her death left a silent dark hole in our family like an extinguished hearth no one could relight. We talk around her history, unknowingly lacing her secret and our shameful failures deeper into ourselves.”Pham dissects his difficult relationship with his father, a man burdened with surviving in a new land and providing for a wife and six children. Pham pays homage to man brought up with different values struggling to re calibrate in his new universe. “Chi…I shouldn`t have beat her like that ….My father beat me. I didn`t know any other way.” Pham writes with awe and sadness of a man with whom he couldn`t quite connect. “He was a worrier, a planner, a schemer, his brain an algorithm with too many variables which frequently crashed and never yielded the optimal solution.”‘Catfish and Mandala’ reads as a poem to the emotional pitfalls of straddling cultures, of leaving something behind and yet not finding something to replace the past completely. “I move through your world, a careful visitor, respectful and mindful, hoping for but not believing in the day when I become native.” It blends personal history with that of a nation, that of a people.Andrew Pham is a master prose stylist whose sentences sparkle with originality and ornate metaphors. “Happiness, sorrow, and abuse were mixed up like vegetables in a soup.” Simple and often deeply personal, they charm as they challenge. “His (Chi`s) ashes were scattered on the sea he never finished crossing.”There are a few places where his simile-rich sentences stray, but by far the norm is excellence. At times, Pham`s artistry models the very best of traditional Japanese haiku. “Morning brings a drizzle as fine as fish bones.” “Like striking vipers, the canes blurred through the air.”Other times, Pham descriptions are simply perfect. “Hands braced on the table, they sit with their knees up near their ribs, three hyenas tearing into the ruptured belly of a deer.” Despite his discomfort with lingering in the limbo between his old and new homes, Pham knows both places better than most. His description of his birth people could easily fit his newly adopted home as well. “We are, by our own closed admissions, a fractious, untrusting tribe unified only because we are besieged by larger forces.”Read this book if you love exquisite, dazzling prose. Read this book if you have lost someone close and your heart is full of pain and regret. Still more than anything read this book if that bewitching dragon of Southeast Asia, Vietnam herself, has beguiled you in some way or another. “A little girl, barefoot in mud, clutches a wooden doll, her eyes stabbing mine, wonders on her face.”

CATFISH AND MANDALA Is a magical memoir, a wonderful story of Andrew's journey from Vietnam to America and back again with a detour around Japan. Growing up as a boat person, then gang banger in East San Jose before his bicycling the length of Viet Nam, his memoir here is a search for identity, which he shares with us with so many of the outrageous encounters he encounters in his travels. Sprinkled with amazing meals and an appreciation of Vietnamese food that some will find discomfiting, they also serve as a prelude to his later cookbook. This book is a recounting of his family's travails and provides a keen, lyrical insight into one sensitive person's immigration and identity experience. A wonderful read--enjoy.

I kind of like travel books and journals so I really enjoyed this book. Not just because it was about travelling in Vietnam. But because the author, and his family, had come from Vietnam. And he decided to see Vietnam via the bicycle seat. So we have Vietnamese-American who is trying to find his roots in a nation that does not even see him as Vietnamese. Yeah, they think he is Japanese because the American diet makes him look so NOT Vietnamese. There is humor, adventure, and sometimes a touch of danger as those around him see him as an outsider. Which he is.It also touches on Vietnamese history via the history of his own family and the history of those he meets who stayed behind. And he also shows us what Vietnam has become.I don't want to say anything else because the book is pretty powerful. It is a search for memories and identity. And you really have to read it for yourself.

Life was tough for vietnamese families surviving the civil was but was also tough being a kook in american culture, and tough within the vietnamese family culture. Why did fathers try to beat discipline into their kids - it happens world wide and is passed down generation to generation. We s it because we work so hard and sacrifice for our kids and then they threw it back

What a well written journey! Totally honest and forth telling. The author met many trials and tribulations on his voyage back to his native land, but...he is definitely a survivor! I loved learning more than I knew (at this date) about Vietnam. As a budding sociologist, it was very interesting. I am so glad that I came upon this book! You will learn a lot by reading it too, if you are from the West.I absolutely loved it....5 stars!

An extraordinarily well-written memoir of a young Vietnamese-American who bicycled back to his roots. During the year of his strange, sad, tough bittersweet journey through Vietnam, Andrew Pham recalls his youth, his recent past, and his love for his family, Vietnam, and America.Pham weaves his life story with that perfect blend of humor-sadness-humor that has the reader laughing one moment and choking down tears the next. An excellent read!

One of my top favorite books of all time. It works on so many levels. It is the tale of an adventurous bike journey lasting months. It is also a tale of self-discovery, a Vietnamese immigrant trying to find his identity. It is the tale of a family of boat people fleeing the fall of Saigon and the establishment of life in the U.S. And it tells of the culture of Vietnam at the time of his return, including their attitude toward Vietnamese who have immigrated to the U.S.

This book speaks of one man's journey to go to Vietnam, after being raised in America (Viet-kieu). It goes into depth about his preconceptions, commitments, discoveries, challenges, and reactions of others to his presence in Vietnam. The book describes what it must've been like to try to get out of the country when it was besieged through descriptive stories of older generations. Cultural and historical background, through details of family relationships, everyday life, and differing beliefs, gives the book depth. I learned about filial relationships, friendship, etiquette, entrepreneurship, tourism, dealing with change and finding your roots.

Very simple, easy to follow recipes that my 13 year old can make on her own.

I've recently got interested in baking!! And this book is amazing! It's very straight forward and easy to follow! So far I've only made cookies and they've been coming out a little tough but I'll get the hang of it! Great book!!!!

Great cookbook!

Best chocolate chip cookie recipe ever. I use this book all the time. All the recipes are quick and easy.

What recipe book has almost zero pics of finished products? It always helps when trying a new recipe to have something to aim for. Really disappointed- this was a gift for a budding talented teenage baker- this gift a big fail. First reaction of us all was “where’s the pictures of the food?”

GRANDAUGHTER LOVES THE BOOK

Great cookbook!

I saved the Tres Leches Cake recipe (pp.104-105) to make for an important event, and today it happened—my hubby’s birthday. The title of the book, The Deceptively Easy Dessert Cookbook includes the term “easy,” which always appeals to me. I’d had Tres Leches cake before from a professional chef, so I was totally intimidated. However, the intro to this recipe explained in simple, confidence-building language that this is a pan cake drenched in a couple of different milks and with a sweetened whipped cream topping. I’d built the task up in my mind to gargantuan heights unattainable by mere mortals such as myself. But, hey, how difficult could a sheet cake be? I was game. This cake needs to be made ahead, which worked out perfectly.I’d prepared the sheet cake and soaked it with the appropriate filling while tomorrow’s birthday boy was at a meeting and chilled it all night in the ‘fridge. When he and the dog were out for their morning walk, I made the whipped cream topping and stuck it in the back of the refrigerator; Author Robin Donovan said to wait to put the topping on until just before serving it. Miraculously, hubby went through the entire day without a clue about what awaited him. After this evening’s dinner salad (I knew to make a light meal—I knew what awaited us), I got the cake out, topped two pieces with the sweetened whipped cream, and planted a few red raspberries on top for color and flavor, which was the only way I varied this recipe. Was it a hit? OMG, yes! We shared pieces with several neighbors and still have enough for tomorrow. This recipe would be a favorite at whatever function it ends up at. Next time, invite it along to your next shared meal. Everyone will be glad you did.Up next: Homemade caramels (p. 144) sound amazing, but so do a lot of other recipes. The publisher kindly furnished me with an examination copy of The Deceptively Easy Dessert Cookbook. There are only two things I miss in this cookbook: a recipe for carrot cake and more pictures of the results of the recipes. I most appreciate the easy-to-follow recipes and the accolades that follow.

Photos are beautiful.....and the narration makes me want to go to South America to see all these fascinating places. I bought this for a student who likes non-fiction and has to read a book about Latin America. This 8th grader describes herself as someone who doesn't like to read, and even she has enjoyed it.

Book in good condition

I read it quickly and promptly donated it.Lacks depth, but then, it was probably written for a traveler who will not spend much time in S. America.

Fast shipping. Product was as described.

Good book for school

This book goes against christian principles. It makes the natives who poured out their own neighbors blood out to be innocent. It makes it out like the Spanish were devils from hell. It has multiple chapters on Evolution, and Darwin's enlightenment.I do understand that most of the Spanish were greedy, but you have to understand that the Spanish saw the natives for what they were, and they were afraid of them. I do understand that not all the natives were bad. Some weren't, but most were. But Darwin and his theory is just wrong. It has been tested and found wanting, and yet we still teach it as real truth. For one we have not found one real missing link that isn't made up of monkey/human bones from some old cave. For two scientists have tested the million year old theory and it doesn't hold water. The sun would be older and redder.I never intend to open this piece of garbage ever again.

I made the mistake of purchasing this printing of C.S. Lewis' book without checking reviews. Although the book written by C.S. Lewis is a good one, I would encourage buyers of this book to purchase one from a different publisher. This edition was very difficult to read, because it has many, many typographical errors, uses very small font size that is hard to read, and on every page, substitutes parts of words with symbols or the wrong letters, and occasionally leaves out words altogether. There is no editor or publishing house mentioned in the book itself.

Take note - this product is "print to order" which means that when you order, it is printed and shipped out.Mine has a production date of November 4, 2016.Unfortunately, there are several attributable flawsSurprised by Joy: The Shape of My Early Life which make this a poorly produced item. The first printed page contains a simple listing of the content and a forward by C.S.L.1 - There are no page numbers2 - The typeset and layout are fatiguing to the reader with indistinct paragraphs and only vague chapter divisions with no break in pagination.3 - There are many typos and "orphaned" words and sentences. I counted five on the 12th printed page alone.I suggest you seek a standard published and printed version of the book.

I only give this two stars to represent the content itself being very good - otherwise I would give it one. I rarely take the time to review books, as a busy Mom of four, I barely get time to read them much less review them. But I thought customers should know this book is strangely and terribly printed. If there are other reviews saying this then I guess I should have read them. It has missing words, missing or wrong punctuation, numbers in the place of letters sometimes..! What?? I can still make out the story so I will deal with it, but it sure is annoying. I have attached a couple photos so you can play the see-how-many-typos-you-can-find game. Undoubtedly more than in this hurried review. It's like a college paper before any edits, typed in haste and delirious from lack of sleep... Order from another seller and enjoy intriguing autobiographical writing from dear old Jack (Lewis).

"But what, in conclusion, of Joy? For that, after all, is what the story has mainly been about. To tell you the truth, the subject has lost nearly all interest for me since I became a Christian." From final page of Surprised by Joy.This book describes C. S. Lewis's intellectual journey from Atheism to Christianity, and how the felt experience he calls Joy led him there. After conversion, the Joy that once made everything else in his life pale in comparison became a subject of disinterest to Lewis. His pursuit of the pearl of great price seems to end in an existential malaise. Was Joy just a cosmic bait-and-switch?Lewis's journey begins with early experiences that produced in his imagination "an unsatisfied desire which is itself more desirable than any satisfaction." (p. 18.) These inward experiences filled him with enormous bliss and created an inconsolable longing for something he knew not. The experiences would pass in a moment but they left behind "a longing for the longing that had just ceased" and "everything else that had ever happened to me was insignificant in comparison." (16.) Of this Joy, Lewis wrote that "the central story of my life is about nothing else." (17.)Yet, in connection with his final steps toward Christianity, "No kind of desire was present at all." (231.) Lewis did not attribute his eventual belief in Jesus as the Son of God to an intellectual or emotional decision, or even a determined will. Rather, he describes his conversion in existentialist terms: "[A] man is what he does; there is nothing of him left over or outside the act. As for what we commonly call Will, and what we commonly call Emotion, I fancy these usually talk too loud, protest too much, to be quite believed, and we have a secret suspicion that the great passion or the iron resolution is partly a put-up job." (237.)Looking back on Joy, Lewis wrote, "I now know that the experience, considered as a state of my own mind, had never had the kind of importance I once gave it. It was valuable only as a pointer to something other and outer." The experiences of Joy were relegated to the "lower life of the imagination." They conveyed no spiritual knowledge and imparted no spiritual life: "This lower life of the imagination is not a beginning of, nor a step toward, the higher life of the spirit, merely an image. In me, at any rate, it contained no element either of belief or of ethics; however far pursued, it would never have made me either wiser or better." (167.) No wonder, then, that the subject of Joy had lost nearly all interest for Lewis as a Christian. What leaves this book on a somewhat minor note is that Lewis never describes a real Christian spiritual experience that comes anywhere close to uplifting the soul as Joy did. Nowhere does Lewis speak of Christian experience that compared in any way to the Joy that had filled him with enormous bliss, created inconsolable longing, made all else insignificant in comparison, and of which he would say "the central story of my life is about nothing else." The book ends with the impression that the existential act of belief was the definitive mark of Lewis's Christian experience. There seemed to be no analog for Joy in his own Christianity as there was, for example, with Bernard of Clairvaux who could write: "We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread and long to feast upon Thee still We drink of Thee the Fountain Head and thirst our souls from Thee to fill"

C.S. Lewis gives an outstanding philosophical explanation of the consistency of the Christian world view and how miracles are consistent with such an outlook - and does it in such an engaging manner typical of his excellent writing skills. Some of the philosophical points are quite deep and illustrate the breadth and depth of C.S. Lewis's understanding of philosophy as well as his good acquaintance with the findings of modern science. The genius of C.S. Lewis is showing the unique and profound difference of the Christian message compared to other philosophies, presenting it in a very straightforward and understandable manner and showing how the overall consistency of this viewpoint meshes well with real experience. Whether someone accepts the message or not, I would think it would be difficult to argue against the coherency of the picture presented here.

The negativity of this rating has nothing to do with the work of CS Lewis and everything to do with the absence of editing. Typos and spelling errors absolutely plague this kindle edition. Considering the fact that most readers who are interested in this work have some familiarity with academic quality, I am surprised that such an edition found its way into the market at all. This is a poor decision on behalf of everyone involved with this publication.

Review

Praise for Joel Kotkin’s The Human City: Urbanism for the Rest of Us“[Kotkin] weaves an impressive array of original observations about cities into his arguments, enriching our understanding of what cities are about and what they can and must become.” —Shlomo Angel, Wall Street Journal“Kotkin argues that suburbs are where middle-class families want to live. . . . A city hostile to the middle class is, in Kotkin’s view, a sea hostile to fish.” —Alexander Nazaryan, Newsweek“[The] kinds of places that are getting it right . . . we might call Joel Kotkin cities, after the writer who champions them. These are opportunity cities . . . [that] are less regulated, so it’s easier to start a business. They are sprawling with easy, hodgepodge housing construction, so the cost of living is low. . . . We should be having a debate between the Kotkin model and the [Richard] Florida model, between two successful ways to create posterity.” —David Brooks, New York Times“Kotkin’s premise focus[es] on the predictions made by some economists who believe suburbs are going to wither as more Americans return to the cities. He [says] those have been hasty reactions to the 2008 economic recession, and that humans’ desire for spacious living remains strong. ” —Ronnie Wachter, Chicago Tribune“The Human City . . . takes a wider and longer view. Kotkin shows how cities developed as religious, imperial, commercial, and industrial centers. . . . To his subject Kotkin brings a useful worldwide perspective.” —Michael Barone, Washington Examiner“[Kotkin] believes it’s time to start rethinking what suburbia can be and to become more strategic about how it evolves.” —Randy Rieland, Smithsonian.com“Kotkin recommends that we embrace a kind of ‘urban pluralism’. . . . That means a sustained effort to make the city livable, yes, but it also entails acceptance of the suburbs. . . . The reality of suburban life isn’t as grim as the naysayers suggest, and Kotkin rattles off a long list of statistics to prove it.” —Blake Seitz, Washington Free Beacon“[Kotkin] writes that the suburbs are alive and well—and are positioned for strong opportunity.” —Michael Stevens, Crain’s Chicago Business“Whether you’re a downtown dweller or suburbanite, renter or owner, there is plenty of urban food for thought in The Human City.” —Deborah Bowers, Winnipeg Free Press“A long and lucid argument against . . . the current orthodoxy—that high-density living in the core, rather than suburban sprawl, is the optimal design for the modern urbanopolis.” —Pat Kane, New Scientist“[The Human City] is a prolonged argument for development that responds to what people want and need during the course of their lives . . . . [It] is not meant as an anti-urbanist tract, but rather as a redefinition of urbanism to fit modern realities and the needs of families. . . . It’s hard to argue with that point.” —David R. Godschalk, Urban Land Magazine“The notion that people are dying to leave the suburbs is just not true. . . . Kotkin [says] most of the job growth and affordable housing are in the suburbs.” —Kim Mikus, Daily HeraldAdvance praise for Joel Kotkin’s The Human City: Urbanism for the Rest of Us“The most eloquent expression of urbanism since Jane Jacobs’s The Death and Life of Great American Cities. Kotkin writes with a strong sense of place; he recognizes that the geography and traditions of a city create the contours of its urbanity.” —Fred Siegel, scholar in residence at St. Francis College, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research“Kotkin is a refreshingly poetic and compelling writer on policy; he weaves data, history, theory, and his own probing analysis into a clear and soulful treatise on the way we ought to live now.” —Ted C. Fishman, author of China, Inc. and Shock of Gray“Kotkin is one of the clearest urban writers and thinkers of our time. His first-hand experiences and insights on a broad array of issues such as inequity, infertility, lifestyle, and urban design shake the reader like a jolt of urban caffeine.” —Alan M. Berger, codirector of the Center for Advanced Urbanism at MIT, founding director of P-REX Lab“While advocates trumpet megacities and global urbanization, Joel Kotkin makes an informed case for urban dispersal and argues that bigger and denser are not necessarily better.” —Witold Rybczynski, author of Mysteries of the Mall“This book asks the crucially important question, ‘What is a city for?’ It should be read by all urban planners and included on the reading list for any urban planning course in a university.” —Chan Heng Chee, chairman, Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities, Singapore University of Technology and DesignPraise for Joel Kotkin’s The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050:"Given the viral finger-pointing and hand-wringing over what's seen as America's decline these days, Mr. Kotkin's book provides a timely and welcome. . . antidote." —Sam Roberts, New York Times"Kotkin. . . offers a well-researched—and very sunny—forecast for the American economy. . . . His confidence is well-supported and is a reassuring balm amid the political and economic turmoil of the moment." —Publishers Weekly"A fascinating glimpse into a crystal ball, rich in implications that are alternately disturbing and exhilarating." —Kirkus Reviews"Kotkin provides a well-argued, well-researched and refreshingly calm perspective." — Joe Friesen, The Globe and Mail"Lamenting its own decline has long been an American weakness. . . . Those given to such declinism may derive a little comfort from Joel Kotkin’s latest book." —The Economist"Kotkin has a striking ability to envision how global forces will shape daily family life, and his conclusions can be thought-provoking as well as counterintuitive." —WBUR-FM, Boston's NPR News StationPraise for Joel Kotkin’s The New Class Conflict:"Kotkin is to be commended for seeing past the daily bric-à-brac of American politics to perceive the newly emerging class divisions." — Jay Cost, The Washington Free Beacon". . . Paints a dire picture of the undeclared war on the middle class." — Kyle Smith, New York Post". . . In having the courage to junk the old nostrums, [Kotkin] has taken an important step forward." —Financial Times"This original and provocative book should stimulate fresh thinking—and produce vigorous dissent." —Foreign AffairsPraise for Joel Kotkin’s The City: A Global History:". . . This fast read succeeds most with Kotkin as storyteller, flying through time and around the world to weave so many disparate histories into one urban tapestry." —The Fifth Annual Planetizen Top 10 Books List, 2006 Edition". . . Offers fascinating insight into the ideologies that have created different city designs, and into the natural human desire to gather together to live and for commerce." —Steve Greenhut,The Orange County Register"The book is taut, elegant, informative and lots of fun to read. When I got to the end, I wished it had been longer." —Alan Ehrenhalt,Governing Magazine

I greatly appreciate Joel Kotkin book. I am citizen who volunteers to serve on the El Paso County Planning Commission. The City of Colorado Springs constitutes some 70% of the urbanized population in the County. I have been intuitively ambivalent about efforts to increase urban population densities. Many professional planners treat increased urban density as if it is a modern "Holy Grail". My wife and I live in a suburban setting, in one of 126 detached townhomes inside a gated community. I prefer not to maintain a yard and we enjoy the freedom to travel. Transportation is good and.I can travel to the City's relatively small core in 15 to 20 minutes. All 4 of our adult children all live in a suburban setting with good sized yards and 2-car garages. It is a great place to raise children. Some people want to live in a higher density apartment or townhome. They like this life style. Joel used a heavily data-driven narrative to both validate my residential living choice and to help me to understand why others will choose something different. Joel insists that housing must work for the resident, not some planner or governmental official. Joel also exposes much commonly accepted thinking as being unsupported by the data. This a good read for anyone interested in understanding the urban, suburban, and exurban dynamics. I recommend it very highly!

I live in a small city in the Northern Rockies. Anti-family/ anti-single-family-homes/ anti-middle class/ cars-are-evil urban planners are currently in control. This book is a welcome counter-argument. Joel Kotkin cogently reaffirms the obvious: the purpose of a city (and, I would argue, of a whole society) is to preserve natural resources while constructing a human-built environment that enables individuals to live flourishing lives and promotes healthy family life. Like our generous Founders, we should show intentional concern for "our posterity."He points out that, through a lifetime, each individual and family passes through life stages. As we change, the places we call "home" are likely to change as well....from parental home, to college dorm, to shared apartment, to childless couple condo, to a detached house with a yard, to an empty nest, to an assisted living facility. Truly inclusive city planning needs to be open to all sorts of residential preferences if people are to live and flourish in urban environments. I'm very grateful to Joel Kotkin for writing this book.

A bit long and dry in presentation and long read. However, the discussion / review on the apparent impact cities have on people was interesting as was the identification that trendy city planning is not delivering what people really want in housing. The world wide same trends and same problems highlights the experts are floundering around without acceptable solutions. A good contribution to the cities for families or humans discussion. Thank you.

If you have an interest in how we should manage our growth and development then you should read this book. There are great insights on what makes a city livable for people of all income levels. I have friends and family who are not interested in the detail and I ask them to read the final chapter.

A must-read to understand cities in America.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for the author's light touch writing about a lot of statistics. While I was certain that cities were becoming increasingly awful places, not the utopias central planners tell us they are, I didn't know that most people agree with me and are voting with their feet by moving to the suburbs. This book very much put what I have learned and have been confused by from New Urbanism in to perspective.

The general point of this book seems to be that cities are bad and suburbs are good. Kotkin's most widely publicized argument is that suburbia will protect us from plunging birthrates. However, Kotkin writes that (a) affluent nations are suburbanizing and (b) birthrates throughout the world (not just in affluent nations but even in not-so-affluent places like Iran and Morocco) have been plunging. If both (a) and (b) are true, obviously suburbanization has not prevented declining birthrates.Kotkin is right about one thing: families are being priced out of our most affluent cities. He therefore argues that children simply don't belong in cities. But it seems to me that one could just as easily argue that we should allow more urban housing to reduce housing costs, and thus make city living more affordable for those who want it.

Joe fails to understand history and mistakes ant-union, trickle down for trickle on.

Here is the inside story of one of our most important government services, a history of an organization known to millions of people around the globe but to only a handful of Americans. Heil's book celebrates this nation's dedication to the practical application of its democratic foundations―our freedom of speech and press. (Walter Cronkite)Voice of America: A History, the first comprehensive history of hte VOA since the mid-1980s,... is a valuable account that deserve a wide readership, both within the Foreign Service and among the general public. (Steven Alan Honley Foreign Service Journal)For those wondering why, in the presence of global commercial news networks, there is still a need for the Voice of America.... Heil's comprehensive history of America's largest publicly funded overseas broadcasting network surely provides a most comprehensive answer. (The Economist)[Heil's] familiarity with both the nitty-gritty and the larger issues surrounding "the Voice," as the VOA is commonly known, does much to make the story come alive, as do the anecdotes and transcripts of radio broadcasts he intersperses throughout the narrative... this is a valuable account that deserves a wide readership. (Foreign Service Journal)Voice of America: A History effectively chronicles an important corner of American cultural history. (Seattle Times/Post Intelligencer)Heil's book is a must read for anyone who is interested in enhancing America's standing in the world. (Walter R. Roberts Mediterranean Quarterly)Heil, who spent 36 years at the Voice, was uniquely placed to writeVoice of America: A History, a comprehensive and captivating insight... stretching from the launch of the service in February 1942 to its 60th anniversary. (Morand Fachot DIFFUSION online)Anyone looking for a richer understanding of recent international information activities will find this work worthwhile. (Laura A. Belmont Register of the Kentucky Historical Society)The breadth and scope of this book mean it is essential reading for all those involved--or with an interest--in public diplomacy, international affairs and the media. Upon receiving the book i was astonished by the size of the publication, and thought to myself how and what could possibly fill such a tome. However once i started reading i could see the reason for such a large book.Starting off with the Tianamen Square episode and then proceeding through the history of VOA,and various other consequences in history the stories are well told in great detail.I found this book to be an excellent record of what VOA really stands for in the world outside of USA.To the rest of the world the book carries the message of reliability and truthfulness. This book truly is America,it truly is the Voice Of America. It is both a history and historical record of America. There are a few photographs included portraying some of the key people and places, but this does not detract from the main purpose of the prose contained within.

Alan Heil has given us the story of the Voice of America, the US Government's international radio stations, from the perspective of one of its longest-serving employees. Mr. Heil started with VOA in New York, and moved with them to Washington, DC in the 1950s. He tells the stories of the broadcasters and broadcasts as only someone on the inside can. This is a must read for anyone interested in International Broadcasting or American policy.

We are using Voice of America A History to assist us in producing a Broadway musical ("voice") created byPaxton Farrar (student at NYU and playwright). Though the musical is staged in the late 40's all of theinformation about VOA for the decades discussed in Heil's book was tremendously useful in understandingthe dedication to the Charter and to journalistic truth. Voice of America is as important to listenersall of over the world today as it was to the post WWII years. Alan Heil did an incredible job ofcapturing the life stories of those involved with VOA and those dependent on it for truth aboutthe value of people and their quest for freedom. Bravo!

Alan Heil has written a highly-readable book with excellent documentation. His keen insight into origin and development of the Voice of America was reflected in his writing -- and his numerous examples of VOA's impact upon foreign audiences was compelling. His front-row seat to the continuing challenges to VOA independence (and its integrity) make this a "must read" for any student of international communication and public diplomacy. Readers may not like the conclusions at the end of the book, but -- like the Voice itself over most of its years -- they are credible and "straight."

This book is very enjoyable reading. It's like a memoir or autobiography of Voice of America, definitely not a stuffy academic work.

it's a good book, especially for someone that really need an information about the history of the voice of america.
