This book, All Roads Lead to Austen, called to me as it was about travel, adventure and, of course, Jane Austen books. I have to admit straight away that I did not finish this book. I just plain ran out of steam and got a little.....bored.The idea of spending a year traveling in foreign counties is very intriguing and adventurous. I know this not only by reading as much as I did of this book, but because I have done just that. Decades back I traveled around Europe for an entire year and half. No plans in particular, just roaming and enjoying other cultures. That is an adventure in itself, although my father didn't quite agree with that sentiment at the time. LOLI could relate to that part of the story about picking up books from the countries she visited. Being a bookworm I am guilty of packing a suitcase with books from foreign places, dragging heavy luggage along to enjoy my treasures when I got home. The author did manage to come up with a good reading list from the countries she traveled.Talking about the Austen novels with her book "clubs" was also enjoyable. But I started losing interest in her nattering on about her family, her mother and the sometimes pretentious observations about her love life. Do I believe she honestly met a Mexican man and moved in with him without knowing much about him? No, I don't. Maybe it happened but it seemed exaggerated. So did her affair with the Argentinian.Basically, there wasn't enough Jane Austen in a story with a title All Roads Lead to Austen. That's my humble opinion.

I didn't think I was going to like a travelogue, but I enjoyed it immensely! I love a good love story and with this book you get three: her love of Jane Austen, her love of South America, it's people, culture, and language (their dialects), and her love story. I am a fan of Jane Austen myself and I really enjoyed reading the discussions that the book groups had. I also enjoyed her descriptions of the six different countries that she stayed in. Overall, I really enjoyed reading about her trip and what other people in different countries think about a favorite author. I also have started reading through my Austen books as well due to this book, starting with Emma!

I really loved this book, the author, professor Amy Elizabeth Smith who teaches writing and literature (including a course on Jane Austen) at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, decides to take a year long trip through Latin America holding a book club while in each country on one of Jane Austen's books. I am not an ardent Jane Austen follower like so many people seem to be, but this book actually makes me want to revisit some of Austen's work.I first became interested when I saw that the first stop on her trip took place in my hometown of Antigua, Guatemala, where she also went to learn some Spanish, since she planned on holding the groups with local people in each of the countries she visits, Guatemala, Mexico, Ecuador, Paraguay, Chile and Argentina. She wanted to find out whether Latin American readers would connect with Austen, the way the people in the States do, and how well the characters of her novels would fare if they were transported into the different Latin countries. She has a wonderful way of describing each place she visit, Giving us a little history of the area, and of their famous authors. She makes memorable friendships and even a romance. Definitely worth a read in my opinion.

A travel narrative with some romance and a literature angle - sounds intriguing. But I've never read Jane Austen and there's a lot of Austen in All Roads Lead to Austen. I'm happy to say, it didn't matter, I still loved the book. So I imagine that if you DO know your Jane Austen, you will enjoy it even more.Professor of Literature Amy Elizabeth Smith takes a year to travel through Latin America while rounding up book discussion groups wherever she goes to talk about Jane Austen in translation. Smith, in her forties, takes a short immersion course in Spanish at the beginning of the trip, but she pretty much learns Spanish on the fly. And since Spanish is different in each country she visits, it's a constant learning and re-learning process.Smith seems to be a fairly upbeat and outgoing person, while still being bookish. This is a great combination for a narrative of this sort - she is traveling mostly on her own, but has a lot of contacts and friends of friends to help her get established in each place. One of the recurring scenes has her visiting the bookstores of each country, as well as the flea markets and thrift shops. That's my kind of travel!Even the romance is well done - there's the handsome and well-read boyfriend in Puerto Vallarta she spends a month with (they say it's the best way to learn a language. . .), and her indecision over whether she wants to take the relationship further. She doesn't want to leave her good job in California and he has deep roots in Puerto Vallarta. How would Austen write her way out of this dilemma? All Roads Lead to Austen was an enjoyable trip through Latin America and through the works of Jane Austen. And there's (no spoiler here, as Smith warns us at the opening) even a "reader, she married him" ending.

Anyone who is a fan of Jane Austen novels will enjoy this book. This book explored how timeless and relatable Jane Austen stories are in other cultures and times. Reading this brought me to many diffetent cultures and it showed me how timeless and relative her stories are. In this book people from all walks of life in South America connected with her characters and their struggles. I loved too how the author relates herself to the characters in the Austen. If you are a true Jane Austen lover and follower you will enjoy this book on so many levels. It has renewed my hope in finding my own Mr. Darcy.
