About the Author

Joe Cermele started his career in outdoor journalism in 2004 covering fishing tournaments for a local magazine in his home state of New Jersey. In 2005 while attending Rider University, he became an intern at Salt Water Sportsman magazine, joining the editorial staff full time that same year after graduation. In 2008, he moved to sister publication Field & Stream, where he was named Fishing Editor in 2011. His writing appears monthly in the magazine, he blogs weekly on Field & Stream's website, and also hosts and produces Field & Stream's "Hook Shots," an award-winning web-based fishing show with a punk rock edge. Cermele has fished all over the country and abroad, but when he's not traveling on assignment, you can find him on his boat chasing tuna and striped bass off the Jersey coast, pitching tubes to smallmouth bass on the Delaware River, or flyfishing for trout in New York's Catskill Mountains.

TIP 104: TIE A FIVE-MINUTE FLY   The Woolly Bugger is the perfect pattern for a learning fly-tyer. It’s big, so you can see what you’re doing, and it involves only a few inexpensive materials. Even more importantly, it’s a proven producer for trout, bass, and almost anything in between.  STEP 1 Wrap black 6/0 thread along the length of a size 10 streamer hook. Always wrap away from yourself, over the top of the hook. If you want a beadhead bugger, slide the bead on the hook before starting your wraps.  STEP 2 Secure one large black marabou feather at the front of the hook, and wrap all the way back to the bend. You want to leave enough feather exposed to create a tail.  STEP 3 Connect a 2-inch piece of fine copper wire by the tail, and also a strand of black chenille. Wrap the thread forward, then the chenille, but leave the wire behind. Tie off the chenille with a half hitch.  STEP 4 Now tie on a saddle hackle feather (black or grizzly), palmer it back (wrap with spacing), and secure this with a couple of wraps of the wire. Trim the leftover hackle. Wrap the wire forward, and tie it off with the thread. Trim the excess wire.  STEP 5 Finish the fly with a tapered thread head. Whip- finish, apply a dab of head cement, and you’re done.

This book turned out to be a very good read. It is full of tips, ideas and good hints that everyone can use, beginner to experienced. I bought the e book and the only downside I can find is this. Throughout the book are recommended flies along with a thumbnail size picture. The pictures are very small and I couldn't really see much of the fly. When I double clicked on the thumbnail to make it bigger it pixelated so bad I couldn't see anything there either.

This is an awesome book, and that's rare for an ebook. I have the physical version of the F&S fishing manual, and the Fly Fishing version is just as good and fabulously formatted as an ebook. It's full of good picks and tips and tricks. It's fun reading for momentary downtime and reminds me of all the hours I spent reading DK Eyewitness books visual dictionaries, but with practical information.

I plan on getting into fly fishing eventually, it's such a pricey activity, but this book will surely cut the amount of time down talking your buddies ear off or paying an instructor for answers. I like how you can open the book to any page and learn something new. And for that reason it will make a great coffee table book once your done with it.

This book is awesome and the quality of the book production is fantastic. The book is very comprehensive and would be good for a beginner or someone with more experience. It offers a good overview but also provides some really good fishing "hacks". I would recommend this book. Great coffee table book, to leave around a page through when you have time.

The first night I had this book I couldn't put it down! I read through the entire first chapter, "Tools". I thought I had a "fair understanding" of the basics of Fly Fishing and equipment, and I do to some degree, but the first chapter on fly fishing gear in general is such an eye opener full of neat little ideas, tips, tricks, advice and insight to the various gear offerings out there that after years of fly fishing on and off, I realized I knew FAR less than I thought. A wealth of information in a simple, colorful, layout of short reads. This isn't layed out like a conventional book with full pages upon pages of text. Short, concise, to-the-point without the usual "filler talk" so common in most books. Written in layman's terms and easy to understand. Even if you have no knowledge of the sport or gear used, it perks your interest to learn further. There's no doubt in my mind "anyone", from beginner to seasoned fishermen will gain something. Even if your a bait and lure caster with no interest in fly fishing there's enlightenment within. This is a book that has so much information and ideas that I can already see after reading just the first chapter I'll be referencing it for years to come. A priceless addition to my small library of books, and the knowledge I thought I understood about fly fishing in general prior to reading. This isn't your typical "buy this or that thing" type of book based on an authors opinion that what he/she has and does with it is the gospel of fly fishing and you should "do as I say, buy the equipment I love, use it the way I tell you, and forget the rest". It's based on years of experience and input from professional guides and seasoned fishermen that have seen or learned things the hard way through trial and error, either on their own accord, or that of their customers' repeat mistakes witnessed time and time again through the eyes and ears of professional guides etc. I have read many books and websites over the years on the subject, but this book puts all the right info in a very easy to read format without being so technical as to require an entire library of various references and dictionaries. It may entice you to study further about specific aspects, but it gets the point across well enough to understand things without having a degree in engineering or entomology (the science/study of insects). Not only is the equipment described, but how to use it and little tricks about its use that only come from hands-on experience. The book material itself is first class as well. Heavy, semi-gloss page stock stitched together with corners trimmed and radiused. The cover, although listed as a paperback, is first rate "very heavy" embossed card stock with chromed steel corner protectors front and back cover so the corners won't curl. A very classy book as it were, particularly for a paperback! Weight wise, this book is as heavy as "any" hardcover book it's size and then some. LOTS of bang for your buck in knowledge and quality of construction. I've been around quite a few decades and not some overly excited kid just throwing all this out there in the heat of the moment. I think this is one of the best purchases I've ever made on the subject of Fly Fishing and I think you'll agree. This ones a keeper, and will be read many times over. I highly recommend it to anyone that has the slightest interest, or just want's to learn what it's all about, the why, the what for, and the how-to-do-it of fly fishing. Don't get me wrong. This isn't the "end all to end all" of fly fishing books. There are many great ones out there that will certainly compliment this one and vice-a-versa. But for the money, you'd be a fool to pass this one up in my humble opinion. Read, learn, apply! Then read some more, learn more, and keep applying. A fascinating and well written book you won't want to put down. ;-)

Bought as a gift for my husband - he loves it! He loves to fish and really enjoys this book!

This is a great read, even for the experienced. For the novice or someone thinking about fly fishing, this is indispensable. It covers the many facets and disciplines of fly fishing (trout, salmon, bass, saltwater etc.) has great recommendations on various flies, and reminds those of us who have been fishing for a while of the little things we may have missed or forgot. Every time you read it you will gain something.

Wry colorful and touches on a very wide degree of topics. Excited to keep reading.
