This is not a bad textbook about igneous rocks. It is up-to-date and clearly written. Coverage is admirably complete, with probably more discussion than necessary of some rare igneous varieties. However, the book cannot be recommended for sedimentary or metamorphic petrology. The discussion of the former is notably brief, and the discussion of metamorphic rocks is basically a summary of major points. Without claiming to know how this came about, one might easily get the impression that the author simply "ran out of steam" (or time) after treating igneous rocks in detail. There might be teaching situations in which the allocation of coverage could be made to work, but the broad title "Petrology: Principles and Practice" promises considerably more than it delivers. The book seems singularly deficient in the "Practice" part.One curious feature of the book is that (in my copy at least) there is no index. (The table of contents is not at all detailed and hence no substitute.) In an e-text this is no problem. But in a reasonably expensive hardbound book from a major publisher, especially a book seemingly offered as a textbook, this unaccountable omission is both strange and very frustrating.
It's a modern textbook of petrology for undergraduate students.It covers igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and petrology.I strongly recommend this book for students and professors.
