About the Author
Author, Brian A. Beale, and his wife, Mary, were so excited about having their first child when they were thrown life's biggest curveball with just five words; "Your son has Down syndrome." Not long after receiving this news, Brian wiped the tears from his eyes, realized nothing was going to change the love he had for his newborn son, and set out to turn this experience into a positive one. Brian and Mary founded a non-profit foundation to raise the awareness of Down syndrome and how much these individuals have to offer society, while donating the proceeds to special needs organizations. While starting this charitable initiative is good, Brian always knew he wanted to do more to raise awareness and acceptance of Down syndrome, particularly among school-age children. With a Bachelor's Degree in English and a passion for writing, Brian decided to write his first children's book in an effort to open up the lines of communication between parents and teachers with their children regarding the sensitive and often very delicate subject of Down syndrome and special needs. Brian decided all the illustrations in the book would be completed by individuals with Down syndrome, which truly exemplifies what they can do if just given a chance. As Brian collected illustrations for this book, he could not help to feel inspired, motivated, and generally overwhelmed with a sense of pride and accomplishment knowing how hard each of these kids worked to be a part of this book. Brian and Mary live in Springfield, Pennsylvania with their son, Colin, and his two younger sisters, Samantha and Chrissy, who are learning more every day about Colin, Down syndrome, and acceptance. Brian's hope is through his book, Colin Gets a Chance, many other children will learn the same.

As a Special Education teacher, this is just the book that I have been waiting for. "Colin Gets A Chance" helps us to open the lines of communication between regular education students, children with disabilities and the professionals who work with them. I found that this book was a great "lead in" to conversations with regular education students to make a better inclusion experience for all. Whether it be on the recess yard, teams, special events in or out of the school, or being in classes together, this book allows us to talk freely with children about this very unique subject. This book is a dream come true! Brian: Thank you for writing such a wonderful story and the illustrations are amazing, just like the kids who did them!
This heartwarming book brings awareness to not only children but adults, with a story of what a child with Downs Syndrome is capable of accomplishing. The book is very inspirational to all who read it.I plan on using the book in my classroom so that my students can become aware and empathetic towards children with DS and to see that children with DS should be given a chance in all areas of their lives.Being an art teacher myself, I am touched by the fact that the author creatively selected children with DS to illustrate this beautiful story!!
A touching story that brings tears to your eyes. A young boy with Down Syndrome plays on a local baseball team. His team cheers him on as he steps up to bat. It is a wonderful example of inclusion, acceptance and the power of perseverance. The book was even illustrated by children with Down Syndrome. It truly is a wonderful addition to any child's home library, and should be included in every elementary school and preschool.

This book, written by a father of a school age boy with Down Syndrome, is a great way to inspire student discussions about what they can do to open the door for others. A very positive and moving story, for the kids and illustrated by the kids! GO COLIN!!!!
This is a beautiful story with a great message for kids (and teachers). It was a wonderful conversation starter with our young children who have had limited exposure thus far to kids with developmental disabilities - and I plan to buy a copy for all the classrooms at their pre-school.
Wonderful book for kids of all ages. I read it to my two and four year- old grandchildren. At first I thought they may be too young but they loved it asked me to read it again and again. It's a great story that all kids should have the opportunity to read or be read to.Cathy Keenan
