Relates the practical, realistic side of Jesus and his message. Think about it! Born in a stable; died on the cross. Loved and guided us, helped the poor, cured the sick and troubled, gave us a glimpse of eternity. Was a teacher, philosopher, son of God who took human form...how humble can it get! Why wouldn't he want to be remembered and thought about realistically? Not as an unreachable or untouchable far off Deity but someone who is with us daily and gives us helpful messages we can relate to.This book explains his principles and message and life in a manner we can understand and gives a clear progression of his purpose and what he tried to accomplish; how it actually was and what went on back then.The author follows the scriptures without embellishment or misrepresenting the facts or interpreting them to follow a separate agenda. Anyone can do the research and look it up...it follows the truth that has always been there; to his rebellion against Judaism and the Roman government, to eventually forming his own religion-Christian religion. It's written with reflections that make sense, is easy to understand and explains his life and message in everyday language and logic.It's also a good study book, presents Biblical stories in a new light and helps to renew or continue the faith. Buy the book, you won't be disappointed. It's destined to become an eternal classic.
The Reflection sections clarified the readings (Biblical and others). Alpha and Beta concepts helped with understanding the history. Well researched. Not a quick read, but worth while for thoughtful readers of the Bible
The book gives a very good picture of life at the time Jesus lived, using important literature not often seen. What is important for me is that hengives bible verses followed by his own reflections on their meaning. He shows how the actual life and messages of Jesus were changed and modified by the people who lived after him. I think it would be an ideal book form bible study because it gives bible verses followed by his own reflections in a way that opens them up for further thought and reflection. I believe this would lead to a far better understanding of Jesus and his actual way of thinking.
I had high hopes for this book believing that it would actually cover the first 80 years, but it left me high and dry with many miscues. Bruce Brooks has used one of the worst translations of the New Testament: The American Standard Version which is so flawed it is never used by Biblical scholars. The first head of the Jerusalem church was James, the half brother of Jesus, not "Jacob." I have no idea how he got that but here's Brooks words corrected by me. "Jesus' disciple Levi Alphaeus, [he was actually "Matthew," a tax collector of the tribe of Levi] a tax collector and thus experienced in administration, died early [that's not true - where's the citation?]. He was replaced by his brother Jacob, [wrong] who from then on coordinated the Galilee part of the movement [no evidence of that]. From that base in Capernaum, he sent out a letter to the churches [no such letter exists]: gathering of "brethren," members of the new family of the saved, which met in somebody's home, or maybe the local synagogue [no citation because it doesn't exist and was fabricated by author. [The first substantial church in Israel was begun by James, the half brother of Jesus, and he became the first bishop in Israel, whom Paul identifies in Galatians and in other letters, and visits him in Jerusalem to receive the permission to convert pagan gentiles to the new church [acts 15]. This book is so flawed I'm not even going to address any more of it.I do, however, highly recommend a true Jesus scholar, Paul Frederikson's outstanding book, "When Christians Were Jews: The First Generation." Her's is one of the best covering this topic!
