It is a priceless book on Win32 API! It obviously lacks lots of new features appeared since the time of publishing (almost 20 years ago!); it doesn’t even touch MFC or any other popular programming tool (if you are interested in it); it is written in plain old C (no classes, etc.); but it explains all the basics of Windows programming, all principal Windows elements and how they work together. The language is very good; the samples are simple and thoughtful. And they work even now! I’ve got executables from the original CD that comes with the book: built in 1998, both Debug and Release versions, and they run like a snap – amazing! The CD also contains a help file that covers the whole book – pretty handy, considering the thickness and weight of the hardcopy.

About 2 years ago, I read this book and learned much more than I had previously about traditional Microsoft Windows API GUI programs. Most of my professional experience with programming languages consisted of 11 years with C#. Some of the concepts in the book were not new to me like message pumps and the general way they work under Microsoft Windows. The deep details of message pumps and how they work were new to me and this book went far to teach me the ground level concepts needed to properly set up a visual desktop program under Microsoft Windows using the native Windows API.When I examined how these things are done in other platforms, I was surprised to find that they are sometimes done the same way. If you are using something like .NET, Windows Runtime, or Java Swing, you might not ever encounter these things. However, if your software is defined in a native implementation language, perhaps for the purposes of incorporating DirectX or OpenGL at a native level, you might see such things more often. A book like this make a huge difference in successfully grasping the concepts you need to apply in order to better use such things.

I'm a firmware engineer, and spent a lot of time with RTOS device driver / app programming in C. This book so far is the best book that I've ever bought to program in desktop environment.This book explains Windows application programming using simple C programming (and it's still working for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Desktop app using free Visual Studio Express 2013. I heard you could still use it for Metro programming as well). The code examples are built up gradually from simple to difficult. The explanation is brief but to the point (I can always get the exact details from MSDN). It's enjoyable book to read (specially who likes to read source code, rather than long detail explanation on how each API works). Jargon free, plain English book, perfect for beginners after passing their C programming =)In term of comparison, I couldn't even find other book that explains WIN32 from the bottom layer. Most books focus in middle layer functionality (.NET, XAML, etc).

He starts out talking about the basics and then slowly moves into more advanced topics.As always it's important to know what a book is NOT. This book is not a tutorial for writing windows applications, nor does it discuss MFC or most of the common methods used today for rapidly producing computer programs. This is not REALLY a reference book on win32 either.Instead it provides a tutorial-style documentation for the monstrous win32 API at its most fundamental levels. This book sets the standard for all other code written for any modern version of windows. It addresses real world issues and real world solutions to those problems (such as the chapter dedicated to making unicode friendly programs), as well as some historical issues (the difference between wParam and lParam).No manual is without its flaws. This book is a bit too braod spectrum in the detail levels. There are places in the book where he will delve into details that you could care less about, and there are points that he will put in two or three sentences and assume you understand, although you may not.Despite this, this book is essential to everyone writing code for Microsoft Windows (ANY version). You needn't read it cover to cover, but readiny section I (about 1/3 of the book) is essential. My one wish is that this book came in three volumes, if you haul it between home and school/office it gets to be buronsome. That's about all I can really complain about with this book.

This book covers just about everything a programmer needs to know to write software to run under the Windows operating system. From basic GUI design and operation to more advanced topics like using DLL's and doing advanced graphics, it's all there. The only problem is that it was written in 1998, and some of the methods the author used no longer work with later versions of Visual Studio. A little effort may be needed to adapt the sample programs to work. It would really be nice if newer edition was available. I will still use these techniques, however, now that I can see how to program without having to use the CLI/CLR or C#.

Charles Petzold's "Programing Windows", Fifth Edition is of the first rank, on par with Tom Swan's "Mastering Borland C++ 4.5", which I also have. While Petzold's book was written using Microsoft's Visual C++ 6.0, Swan's was written, as its title implies, using Borland's C++ 4.5, which I have and use as my Windows Programming "bible".Charles Petzold's "Programming Windows" is highly recommended for those programming Windows with Visual C++.N.C. This is a great reference for programmers who want to move away from console programming. It is very comprehensive and covers a lot of ground. Everything from scroll bars and keyboard/mouse input to graphics, mutimedia files and mutithreading are discussed in detail. All of the source code is on the accompanying CD and the author's website so you can customize the programs instead of having to start from scratch.

It is definitely now on the top of my required reading list for my nutrition clients as an easy to understand, comprehensive, educational source of information.Max's writing style is personable and relevant, with a nice sprinkling of modern cultural references just for fun. This work contains clear, concise, applicable and well sourced nutritional concepts that challenge not just the status quo and the (not so well researched) government dietary standards, but also highlights new information that could shift some recommendations made by nutritionists and other health professionals.One of my favorite things about Max's work, which is strongly represented in this book, is his unique ability to take current scientific research, process it, assimilate it, and then give it to us in a truly comprehensive way, without "dumbing it down". You will walk away from this book with practical, usable information to immediately apply to your diet, and a strong desire to share it with everyone important in your life.It is a great read for both the person who has very little knowledge of food and the body, AND for the well educated nutritional professional.Some of my favorite highlights include:Field Notes at the end of each chapter break down weighty concepts into bite-sized tweetable/quotable/memorable nuggets.The genius foods highlighted throughout the book list specific superfoods that quite literally feed your brain.FAQ's at the end of some sections immediately address real life questions that come up after concepts are presented. Goulding's deeply personal and insider knowledge -filled journey around Spain is one for the bookcase. Beginning with his deeply personal initiation to his life in Spain, he sucks you in to a visceral journey around Spain, punctuated by food, alcohol, pig execution, Jose Andrés, tuna hunts, and his new family. Both the intense writing and the mesmeric photography make you want to grab the book, flee to Spain and eat yourself stupid. A literary and gastronomic triumph.

This is good background for anyone interested in learning more about the main currents of Spanish traditional cuisine, or for foodies who may be planning a trip to Spain. But don't expect a comprehensive approach; it's more a pastiche of vignettes, organized by specific cities … Barcelona, Cadiz, Madrid, etc., each of which deals with a food product characteristic of the area. Most interesting are sections devoted to describing the bluefin tuna industry, both local and global; the gathering of "barnacles" from Spain's west coast, or the process of raising hogs and turning them into the famous Serrano ham - this is the "pig" of the title, though the author never gets around to any similar focus on "olive" or "grape." What prevents it from having four, or even five, stars is having to plow through considerable verbiage devoted to the writer's favorite subject - himself! Do we care about how he wooed his Spanish wife, or the route he took to become a writer? Some may ...

I have read all 19 Joe Pickett novels and have recommended the series to a lot of people, but this is the last. The body count has just grown way too high and too gratuitous in such a violent world as ours has become. While I embrace poetic license, this is just more than I can tolerate.

“Wolf Pack” is C. J. Box at his absolute best. I thought the long-running series was in decline after “Vicious Circle” and “The Disappeared.” But this latest book represents a full turnaround. Most readers will finish this compelling novel in one or two sittings.Its plot is intricate, relentless, and up-date; the good guys are nuanced; and the villains come in various forms—some plain evil, others merely contemptible. No surprise then that there’s lots of violence in the story. But killing—whether of animals or people—always has consequences in Joe Pickett’s world.

C. J. Box never disappoints with his series. I have read all 19 books in the Joe Pickett series and always preorder the next one as soon as it becomes available, I hope there are many more to come. When you start reading this novel you can’t put it down, I just received it today and read the entire book. I would highly recommend this book to all, but especially to those who hunt and enjoy the great outdoors. Can’t wait for the next one to see how he tops this one. C.J. Box is one of my favorite authors.

My review of “Wolf Pack” came a little more slowly, and with more deliberation than I normally give. This is because I got the Audible edition at the same time I bought the Kindle edition.STAND-ALONE: It can be read as a stand-alone, but the greatest appreciation will come for devotees of the series.CLIFFHANGER. No. Although there surely will be more Pickett novels, this does not end with a cliffhanger.If I were to rate this only based on the Audible narration, I’d be hard-pressed to rate it four stars, as the writing comes across as just a bit too much of an info dump. However, when I read the Kindle version, the info dump is much more invisible, so I am rating it more highly.WRITING & EDITING: Professional. The flow is good, and the historical bits are interesting. Sometimes the inter-agency tension seems too drawn out, but, as someone who has witnessed just how antagonistic the various factions within the federal and state agencies can be, it had the feeling of authenticity.BLUSH FACTOR: The number of eff words is more than you’ll want to read with your prayer group, probably, but it is not excessive for most folks. Certainly not for me. I mention it only for those for whom it might annoy.No graphic sex, but some of the violence might disturb a few readers. I appreciated the realistic portrayal, though.BOTTOM LINEI enjoyed this murder mystery and consider it a fine Action-Adventure.

Much of the storyline was illogical, with inaccurate statistics that were used to justify FBI activities. The body count, and the level of mayhem made this book extremely distasteful.

Wyoming happens to be one of my favorite states too so that adds a lot of appeal.This is book #19 in the Joe Pickett series about Game Warden Joe Pickett of the Wyoming Fish and Game Department. Joe has his job back (after losing it temporarily in book #18) with the help of former Wyoming Governor Rulon acting as his attorney. And actually he gained some great benefits during the process.In this tale, Joe ends up working with a female game warden from the next District over trying to track down an illegal drone operator who is harming wildlife. They get help from his falconer best friend Nate Romanowski.Added into the mix are the FBI, the DOJ and some dangerous out-of-towners.If you've enjoyed Box's other books, you'll surely love this one. Box is a consistently fine author and I highly recommend this latest book.I'm off now to read SHOTS FIRED, a collection of ten short stories based in Joe Pickett's world, that I somehow missed before this.

Dang now have to wait patiently until August when J C Box's next book arrives. Just saying. Enjoyed this book though I have a tendency to see ahead sometimes too far. My bad I've been dong this since my middle school years wehn I discovered Mysteries and read everyone pretty much worth reading in Townsends Broadwater county MT library in the 60's. Much more picky these days. Box and Craig Johnson are two of my favorites along with a number of others. Husband also enjoys. We buy hard copies if at all posible we have an e-reader which is nicer for travel than paperbacks but nothing beats a good solid hardbound book. And oh yes....the review of the story. YOu don't want me to spoil it do you? Yes body count is up like one unhappy person. If they are feeling jaded with todays world of ugly and evil things happening to good people then of course the question comes to mind WHY on earth are they reading MURDER mysteries at all? I think Box has become a lot more skilled over the years writing. And I also think this book is one of his best. Sorry to say so long to a past character or two as they fell into the fatal category.
