This book is very well written and the passion the author has for this subject shines through, which to me makes all the difference, as I feel she really cares about helping people.It’s definitely not just another cut-and-save type of book. Don’t get me wrong, as I’m sure many others can attest to, it does deliver a wealth of very solid advice on how to make drastic changes in your spending habits and provide great advice on how to save money in a variety of areas.Minimalism is not about paring things to the bone but rather about paring things to just the level they need to be to still keep a grin on your face. Everyone knows how to avoid spending money, how to go for the cheapest option and generally scrimp and save - but this book explains something quite different. It explains how to live a life of quality with minimised outgoings. The concept is a rather groovy one, but the delivery is pragmatic and very much real-world.

This was a informative book that gives more ideas on how to not only start setting up a budget, but also working at getting rid of debt, and in a way declutter your life. It walks you through briefly the different types of spending problems that one could have. Though depending on the type of problem, while some of them can be handled by the individual, others may require the assistance of a professional—knowing which could be affecting you, allows for you to determine the amount of outside help you may need in terms of overcoming your spending problem(s). I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the idea of a minimalist money makeover, and curious to know what type of spending problem they may have.

I am so glad that I found this book! I have been trying to start a budget for so long and now that I am about to buy a new car, this book could not have come at a better time. Reading through the tips on how to save and how to pay off debt really made a difference to my perception of money and saving.The ideas expressed are not rocket science but very powerful.

No new information here on frugality or saving money towards goals, except a few expansions on the 50/20/30 rule of budgeting. Not recommended.

This is a really great guide. It teaches you about all the little things that we don't really need (which is like throwing our money down the toilet) After reading this book I have found that we can still live comfortably while still cutting things out, and believe me, after reading this book you will realize there really is so much we can cut out and so many corners we can cut to save money. Lots of outside of the box ideas.This is a hands down, helpful, and practical money saving workbook. Is great for those over spending or lacking in financial discipline.

As a Protestant, I pray directly to God to confess my sins. However, James 5:16 says "Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed." So confessing to a priest as a stand in for the congregation will certainly fit. 1 John 1:9 gives clear instruction to believers about confessing sin. It begins with the word if: "If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." So no problem there either.The author correctly states it is not so much about our individual actions or thoughts as about our relationship with God. I found all of his secrets useful and well thought out. Especially on how this is such an individual thing, and not a one size fits all grocery list. And delivers it all with humor and good writing that keeps you reading instead of frowning Pharisee style. I found nothing whatever to grumble at. Rats.

In a way, I suspect we all know the 7 secrets deep within us. But the depth of Vinny Flynn's analysis is so honest and personal all in line with Church teaching it actually was one of the more compelling books I've read this year. Just when I thought he hit the main point of each secret, there would be more layers he would uncover. I dare not reveal the secrets here, other than they unpack theology into coherent and clear meaning that even non-Catholics could grasp the concepts. In other words, Vinny Flynn blows open the gate to the long standing cliche of confession and brings it right up to us in very simple terms: God is giving us a chance to come back. It's all there for us if we want it.Throughout the secrets, Flynn combines personal testimony with two big juggernauts, the Catechism (including the astounding section #2840) and Sr. Faustina's Diary revelations. For those on the heavy systematic theology or dogmatic side this might not be for you. Flynn's style is to appeal to the more regular folk and his casual, chatty style may not work for some readers. But what he has to say is required reading for all yearning to overcome the chains that are weighing them down -- and how to do it.This is a positive, hopeful and tremendously insightful book that will truly compel you to want to start anew today. If you let it, allow it to open your heart. As you read on you will find that while you are grateful that it helps you approach Confession in a new light, you will want to read even more about God's love for each of us. "Nothing that you or I have ever done, ever will do, or ever could do, can make Him stop loving us."

This is a great book that will have you looking forward to going to confession. It isn't just about getting confession out of your system so you can receive Communion. This book gives you many insights you may have never considered before. For instance, the fact that confession is all about healing and is an ongoing process. We are not just "fixed" after confession. I think most of us know that we will be back sooner or later and probably sooner. There are many other points to consider in this book. We used it during our apologetics class and soon everyone had a copy. This is a book you will want everyone to benefit from so order more than one copy. Trust me, you will want to read sections of it over and over again.

I read Flynn's other book, the 7 Secrets of the Eucharist, and I enjoyed it. It was simple and lovely, but it didn't change my life. I expected this book to be comparable... but no. This book is far, far more.This book was fabulous. I will read it again and I have already begun to dole it out to any who will take it. Flynn's approach to confession is truly life changing to me. And he has key pieces I find I use in prayer almost daily.I highly recommend this to anyone. It is phenomenal.

I love this book! I read it both before and during my recent trip to Jerusalem and Bethlehem. It greatly helped me towards a deeper understanding of the history and significance of many of the sites I was visiting. There are many wonderful color photos and maps which are a joy to look at. The text, which manages to be both scholarly and easy to understand, gives you the scriptural background of the sites where Jesus lived and walked and also gives you some idea of what you will find today if you visit. I look forward to possibly using the book again on a future journey around the entire country of Israel to visit more of the sites. Regardless of whether or not I visit Israel again, this book will always be a treasured part of my library. I plan to buy other books by Mr. Walker as well, since the very clear way he explains scripture is very easy to understand and has led me to many insights.

Technical aspects were good, and I would recommend the book to a friend - but only if they were looking for a strictly New Testament Christian viewpoint.The book is advertised as a “fascinating, image-rich tour through the land, life and times of Jesus.” However, the 215 pages are mostly text and although color photos do decorate many pages, they were not pictures of the traditional sites most Christians want to visit.The book is fully indexed, both by Biblical reference and by General References. Also included a page of picture acknowledgments and a page of “further reading” references.

I really enjoyed reading this book in preparation for a trip to the Holy Land. The book follows the life and ministry of Jesus from his birth through his resurrection using the Gospel of Luke as the narrative. The book features many Old and New Testament references for each location as well as outside historical information. The many color photographs make this book a vivid, clear picture o.f what to expect when traveling in Israel. Each chapter also includes a section on life in each location today including a brief discussion of the modern history and tensions. I plan to bring the book on my trip as a handy reference guide.

As a biblical theologian, it is always gratifying to find a book of this type that is informative and accessible to lay people as well as the more formally educated in biblical studies. This book, and the companion volume "In the Steps of Paul", have a way of bringing the New Testament alive. Read it along with your Bible and watch the meaning of the texts unfold in a more complete fashion. Short chapters make it a good daily study or bedtime reading also. The illustrations are magnificent! Get this book!

I have not yet finished reading this book and I already want to write a review on my first thoughts.This book delivers what it set to propose: a guide for people who have never been or will never be to Israel. The way the author put together his ideas and pictures makes totally sense! I am very happy to have bought this book to have a better understanding of the land. As Christians we are sometimes closed to new interpretations but I would encourage you to go ahead and get this book, I'm sure you'll also broaden your mind to understand Israel and of course follow in the steps of Jesus :)

Having been to Israel twice and going back in a few months, I would recommend this book. It provides good background to the events that took place in the Bible as well as what a traveler could expect today. The pictures alone, including the aerial views, are incredible. If you are a believer and you've never been to the Holy Land, this book is the next best thing. But I am betting someone who has never been and is reading this book will begin to look for ways to go. The best part for me is the sections in each chapter called "(Name of chapter) today," for here the author gives practical advice about seeing the most important places. There are also several places where he gives advice on seeing the most you can in that arena with limited time (i.e. a weekend). I certainly wouldn't follow his advice place by place, but he certainly gives some good ideas. This is definitely a book you will want along with some of the guidebooks if you plan to go to Israel; it is vital to learn as much as you can before you go.

I will be traveling with friends to the Holy Land this fall. I was given In the Steps of Jesus to read and liked it so much I bought it for a friend who will be on the trip. The book shares concise information on all the places and events of the ministry of Jesus. I liked it because each place was described briefly and used maps and pictures to illustrate. I am now ready for my trip with the help if In the Steps of Jesus.

It’s just never occurred to me to do so. I mean, how weird is that? Imagine my surprise when my granddaughter—a 10-year-old bi-racial beauty—came home from (a predominately white) school recently and told me that her friends all “love touching my hair.” I asked, “why”. She said, “I don’t know. They think it’s cool I guess. Still…it made me feel weird.”That was about three weeks ago. One week ago, I opened the People Magazine, to their book recommendations page, and saw Phoebe Robinson’s book, YOU CAN’T TOUCH MY HAIR AND OTHER THINGS I STILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN. I bought it without blinking.As a woman, I’ve always assumed that ALL women shared—for the most part—the same kinds of experiences. I mean, we have all experienced the same physical experiences, right? And, as a group, we’ve all experienced the same kind of gender bias experiences. You know what I mean; the whole, “stand back and let the men handle this, little lady” thing. We’ve all been undervalued, underestimated and mis-understood. Right? Yes. However, what I guess I didn’t realize was that African-American women have had a whole other set of experiences… That makes me either ignorant, self-involved or just…unaware. Maybe a little bit of each?I want to understand—as much as I can—what my granddaughter may have to face as she gets older.Phoebe Robinson’s book, YOU CAN’T TOUCH MY HAIR AND OTHER THINGS I STILL HAVE TO EXPLAIN, opened my eyes to quite a few issues I never realized existed for women of color. I now know that my Lizzie might always have to have an answer ready for the question, “can I touch your hair”. She might always have to be “the token black friend”. She might always be subjected to stupidity, ignorance and oblivious obtuseness from silly white folka who just don’t get it. That sucks. But, I also now know that she’ll live through it, no matter how awful it might be and be stronger for it.I’m glad I read Ms. Robinson’s book. I appreciate the new insight into my granddaughter’s possible future.As far as the book and the writing within goes… This book is made up of a series of essays on the different issues a woman of color has or may face. As an older woman (translated not-hip, cool or with it), I didn’t appreciate the vulgarity in these essays—especially toward the end of the book where the last chapter was written as a series of letters to the author’s toddler niece, Olivia—this seemed not only unnecessary but also VERY inappropriate. I, too, am an aunt and would never talk to any of my nieces like that—and they’re all adults. Nor did I get many of the pop-culture references and/or all the abbreviations (POC, BPS, OBL, etc.). Again…I’m an old, white lady.However, I understand that the author was just being herself.This is an enlightening and titillating (if somewhat filthy) commentary on our world and the way it treats African American women and African Americans in general. It’s not flattering to white people. But, it’s real.I would recommend it to anyone who needs to see life from someone else’s eyes.

You know how you read Bossypants and then were like, I need more funny and inspiring memoirs RIGHT NOW? So you read Amy Poehler and hers is solid, thoughtful - but not nearly funny enough; and then you read Rob Lowe's first memoir and you're so happy and surprised that the most perfect male specimen ever to walk the planet earth also writes well and is funny and insightful? So you breathe a sigh of release and then Amy Schumer's memoir comes along and you pre-order it and whip that baby open the moment it hits your kindle and you laugh at some of it but then the book takes a weird and not at all funny turn and you realize that it's actually a protracted therapy session in which Amy comes to realize that she kinda hates her mom and is pretty dysfunctional and you sort of want to start a GoFundMe.com site for her so she can get the help she needs or at least hire a better editor next time? Well, Phoebe Robinson is right up there with Tina Fey. I don't say that lightly because I adore Tina Fey and she is a kickass writer and comedian and woman and owns her own life experiences and she can rock a red carpet dress like nobody's business even though she probably prefers jeans and a tee. So, this is serious business.I picked up Robinson's book through some convoluted means - it was on a list or in the recommended reads after a book on some list somewhere or just ran across it randomly...I really don't know. I'd never heard of Phoebe Robinson before (sorry, Phebes) but that, of course, would never stop me from trying out a book. I'm so glad I'm open minded like that because Robinson made me laugh a LOT (even woke my husband up once due to shaking with laughter in bed), but it also made me cry from time to time. AND...it left me a more educated, thoughtful person than I had been before I began. Robinson writes about the black experience and the female experience - one of which I know a lot about, and one about which I know jack, because I am white; even with a tan I just look like Wonder Bread left in the toaster for about 25 seconds. Nada. I grew up in the suburbs of Illinois, Indiana, and Long Island, New York. You can't get much whiter than that.So Phoebe Robinson shared some BPS (Black People Secrets) and, more importantly, she shared her own life experiences, which hit me like a ton of bricks and opened my eyes to perspectives to which I was so blind, I didn't even consider to consider them. Her discussion, for example, of the guilt and responsibility to white people that she felt as a young adult about every word she uttered really forced me to reconsider and reframe the experience of middle class black people (Robinson makes it very clear that she is not speaking for all black people, and as a woman and especially as a cancer patient, I totally get that... so I don't want to make sweeping generalizations). I feel stupid even saying this and I'm sure any POC (person of color) reading this is rolling their eyes and thinking, wow, "Dr." J, you are a moron. Which is true. But at least I'm trying my best to look beyond my own sheltered existence.Anyway. This book is very well written, extremely funny, and offers some really extraordinary insights. I'm so glad it tumbled into my hands, because Phoebe Robibson, you have yourself a new fan for life. Thank you for going all in and sharing so much of yourself with the world.Now quit reading my review and get to the bookstore or Kindle or the library right away!

I relate to each situation in this book because like Phoebe, I am a Black woman. Phoebe is ethnically African American, I am ethnically African American so I understand the linguistics of this book, to the point that it annoyed me. Even when African American's speak AAVE they are not saying hash tag every other sentence and making played out color purple references. I'm glad for her and her book, but any average Black girl could have wrote this because the book is so all over the place it felt like an outline/diary and not an actual book. One chapter she's talking about her hair and then the next chapter she has a list of old white men she want's the sleep with from greatest to least, then she's talking about colorism, after that there is a chapter that is dedicated to the future woman president; it makes no sense. There was nothing about this book that stood out because every other sentence there was a pop culture reference, pun, similes, onamonapia's and more name dropping than a Lil Wayne track. This book is for liberal non Black audiences in cities like Portland Oregon and gentrified Brooklyn. This was long form rambling/ranting in my ear, because there wasn't anything I gained from this, besides 3 chuckles here and there. Kudo's to her for knowing her target audience, because I cringe at the level of assimilation that she talks about is in this book, but get your check. I hope this book sells because her experience's as a Black women are very real, this may be her personality, but it still reeks of performatism.

My husband and I struggled with infertility for close to 7 years. I did Clomid, IUI, IVF, FET. I got pregnant with IVF but it ended in a chemical pregnancy. I also go pregnant with the FET but miscarried at 7 weeks 4 days. We planned to give IVF another try in Sept. 2016. We moved across the country, bought a house and 2 weeks later (2 days before Christmas) I took a pregnancy test that to my complete and utter shock came back positive. I am now almost 18 weeks pregnant with our rainbow baby, a healthy baby girl we are naming Emmerson. I bought this book shortly after my miscarriage and it helped give me hope to hold on to. Now my husband and I read this book to our unborn daughter almost every day (now that she can hear us) and neither of us can make it through without crying.This book is perfect for anyone struggling or who has struggled with infertility, loss or both.We can't wait to read it to our daughter when she is here and remind her every single day how wanted and loved she is.I even bought this book for a friend who has been on a similar journey as me, to help her keep the hope alive and one day be able to read to her precious baby.

I bought this great book for a friend. While I assume this book was written for parents who have adopted, this worked great for parents who struggled with infertility and fertility difficulties. This was a great book to give expectant moms and dads who have undergone fertility treatments to have a child or those who have adopted. What I really loved was the fact that it outlined what the process truly feels like, the excitement of being ready to have a child, the heartbreak when you find out that it isn't a possibility, and the thunderous joy of finally having a child - all without making it religious or too scientific. I cried reading it and cried reading it to my son, who is yet too young to understand this book, but perhaps one day will understand what his parents felt, emotionally, as we journeyed towards becoming parents.

We went through many losses and IVF to get our sweet rainbow baby and this book perfectly exemplifies that story without too much information for a child. I bought three copies to give to people at our fertility center and this ranks as my current very favorite book for our son. It doesn't go into any details of a specific journey, just a couple (non-gendered) that waited and waited for their baby. Makes me weep when I read it.

After years of infertility we are pregnant with twins via IVF. When I read the book I started crying, this explains exactly what my husband and I went though emotionally. I want my babies to know how much we fought to bring them here and how much they are really loved and wanted. This book will do it.

There are not enough good things to say about this book. For anyone who thought they would be like everyone else and just have a baby when they decided to, but then found out that some roads are very long and winding and full of heartbreak, this book is for you. It flawless describes the stages of wishing for a child, the child not coming, the despair and limbo of waiting, and the final glorious moment when your miracle baby finally arrives. As someone who had to wait two years and go through countless procedures and tests, to finally get my miracle baby through IVF, this book makes me ugly cry every time. Buy it for yourself or a friend going through infertility. I bought it before my baby was here and it gave me so much.

I love this book. I originally saw it at Target and was literally crying in the aisle when I read it. It resonated with me because we struggled with infertility for years and this book talks about the waiting in a very simple way that is appropriate for young children. I checked the price on amazon right then and there and ordered it on amazon because the price was cheaper. We used this book as a centerpiece at a table for my Storybook themed baby shower and it was the first book I read to my baby boy when he was born.

As someone who struggled with infertility, this book spoke to us. We want our little one to know just how special he/she is to us because of the complicated journey it took for him/her to get here. Was reading aloud to my husband and unexpectedly started tearing up about halfway through the book because it was completely our story.

It took 4 IVF cycles to make our son. It took at least a dozen reads to be able to get through this book without sobbing. It was written by someone who has been there. “We didn’t make plans”... so perfect. This is a beautiful book, perfect for anyone who struggled to get their baby. It would work for adoption, infertility, and for same sex couples too (the elephants are not gendered). Love it.
