My nine-year-old gives this book and the whole series a thumbs-up! He read it in one day because he loved it so much. We had the pleasure of meeting Dan Gutman a couple of years ago and he was lovely. He truly understands elementary school kids and his series are really enjoyable. My son is already awaiting the next one!

My son really likes this author however the "Flashback Four" is a misfire- four students are selected for missions to go back in time however why these generally unlikeable and unremarkable children are selected is anyone's guess. The story tries to be part history lesson and part story but falls short on both fronts. In addition this book is so genuinely depressing with the kids constantly pointing out that all of these people around them are soon to die- other authors have tackled this same idea with more grace- honestly the characters are just the worst- the story is nonexistent- you will be wondering why you bought this so save yourself the money.

My 10 year old daughter loved the book and the characters. Just as important, the story of the Titanic became a real life adventure to her. In a matter of a few days book three will be released and she has already had me preorder it.

I read this with a group of students. All of us loved it and found it very informative as well as exciting. We can't wait to read the next book in this series to see what the next mission is.

My 8 year old son liked this series a lot. He's excited for the third book to come out.

on page 31, the author mentions Gay Marriage and then Gay people. I have no problems with this issue as an adult political issue, or a civil rights issue. BUT I did have a problem with having to explain to my child who is too young for any of this what the term meant. As an author writing a book on the Titanic and history, why did he have to include such a message? This is what is wrong with America, everything, everything is politically tinged...why? Why cant kids just be kids?

Posada's work ranges from dark to humorous, illustrating an ubiquitous view of pre-revolution Mexican life, from urban existence to folkloric rural life. His images flourish with legendary bandits, prison executions, valientes, and supernatural entities from grinning pests to snarling horned iguanas. As Diego Rivera admiringly said, Posada was "an illustrator of legends." Frank has produced, with lavish illustrations, a fine work about a extraordinary chronicler of an era, and of the human condition.

I bought this as a gift for a friend who loves Posada, and after I saw the book, I almost ordered a second one for myself. Posada is macabre, humorous, and probably the best illustrator Mexico has ever known, and Mexico has known some great ones. I thought I'd seen just about all the types of art he produced but this book was packed with material I'd never seen. A remarkable work of research; an even more remarkable look at the tastes of literate peasants.

Mark Salvatore writes simple, declarative sentences.His Peace Corps memoir, Shade of the Paraiso, is stripped to fact and detail, observation and truth. Even its replication of time — passing slowly at first, building inexorably over months, then racing quickly to its conclusion — makes the narrative foremost a work of literary control.It’s an art, how much the writer reveals of his existence in rural Paraguay — all the while revealing little of his own true emotions.The closest we get to knowing Salvatore is to appreciate his obvious fortitude in the face of familiar Peace Corps challenges: the petty counterpart; the bullying ‘big-man’; the general estrangement from community; the recurring uncertainty. Even the elements, wind and rain and mud, conspire against him.We experience these things, but rarely learn how Salvatore feels about them. Exhibit A, this passage about his garden:'I finished and seeded the soil of two tablones on a warm, clear day with a wind from the east. I planted garlic, onions, parsley, carrots, green chili, bell peppers, and tomatoes.' Soon after . . . 'I hauled water from the well to my bathroom and took a bucket bath. Salvatore rolls up his sleeves (and his pants legs) to rebuild the garden beds.Salvatore’s Health/Sanitation training group arrives in-country on the day of a coup that ended Alfredo Stroessner’s repressive 35-year dictatorship. He soon finds himself in the rural community of Guazú Cuá (roughly ‘the place of deer’ in Guaraní), where he conducts a census and maps the site to learn the community’s needs. The town includes 800 residents and two buildings: a three-block school house and a health center. It’s a wonder the remote population, emerging from decades of repression, accept the foreign agent in their midst at all. The local headmistress publicly redresses him over money, then reports him to Peace Corps HQ via telegram. The road turns to impassable mud in the churning rains. The practical workbook reinforces the book and helps me to problem solve, self reflect and keep trying as I gain more confidence in my interactions with my 3 girls. Trying to stay conscious, respectful and connected as a parent can be hard and in order not to stuff I will do nothing so as not to screw up. This workbook gives me the confidence that I am on the right track.

Bought this to teach parenting skills to my therapy clients, but I’ve enjoyed working through it myself. It is a great way to think about all your interpersonal relationships—not just parent-child.

I've been able to use this in my practice with young mother's that struggle with parenting. This has great ideas.

I'm still reading this book, but so far I've really enjoyed it. It's great for parents/care givers who want to meet children where they are emotionally devoloped to. You are still parenting but it also allows the children to be people too.

This is a great companion to have with The Whole Brain Child book. The activities are really matched up well with the book chapters and provide a practical focus for parents and practitioners. You need to have the book to gain the maximum benefit from the workbook. Excellent material for parents, carers and therapists.

I would actually give this book a 2.5 stars. I am very disappointed in the way this book is written. The author writes as if he is writing for 5th graders. And some of the repetitive sentence structures were annoying. “He then did this.” She then did that.” Just write “Then he did whatever.” Or try the word NEXT! Also, it’s OK to use contractions. People don’t talk like... “I did not go here.” “I thought to myself, ‘I should not do this.’”And, OMG, the Callaway character is just a mess. He wants to do good but doesn’t but knows he should but can’t. Terribly portrayed and miserable to read about.And then the chapters alternate between Callaway and the 2 primary detectives in a way that is jumpy and difficult to follow.I got so frustrated with the poor writing style I had difficulty enjoying the story! Skimmed a lot to finish the book

Tragedy strikes the family of Dect. Gary Holt. His nephew, Isaiah is found shot three times in the car belonging to one of his coaches. There were traces of heroin in the glovebox. There were also texts from a woman friend who happened to be a call girl. How was this possible? Lee Callaway,a local PI was running low on cash. Fortunately a woman was climbing up the stairs to his office looking to hire him. When she came inside he noticed that she was blind, wearing sunglasses and using a white cane. One strange thing was she also wore gloves. She wanted him to find her sister who has been missing for three months. She handed him an envelope with $5000 in it. Strangely enough, both cases overlapped. With people disguised and using aliases, both the police and Lee had a lot of investigating to do. Ultimately each case came to a head with many crazy solutions!

Not bad for a new series. I have bought book two of this new series. I have also read all of this authors other books. He is great writer.

This book is very entertaining and with the short chapters very easy to read. The plot is imaginative and the story used to reveal the plot is interesting. This is the kind of book you wish would never end. the characters are easy to like and the story moves at a quick pace.

This is a very good read. It's easy to follow, intriguing and even comical at times. Just a very believable story

I love Thomas FIncham books, would recommend them to anyone who loves a mystery.

another excellent book from Mr. Fincham....I am always left with the feeling of "when is his next book coming out"...and thank goodness he has found his calling in being an author....
